What Is The Rest Is Football?

Goalhanger Podcasts struck a deal with Netflix to bring Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer, and Micah Richards’ hit football podcast to the streamer as a daily show specifically for the 2026 FIFA World Cup — making it one of the first Netflix podcasts to go live regularly, broadcasting daily from a studio in New York with full camera work, guests, and genuine production value. whats-on-netflix

The timing was everything. With the North American World Cup already generating enormous buzz, football fans across the globe needed their daily punditry fix — and these three delivered.

Why This Is Such a Big Deal

Netflix has had over 50 unique podcasts on its platform in 2026, yet none had ever featured in the daily Top 10 charts — until now. The Rest Is Football shattered that barrier, consistently ranking in the top 3 in the United Kingdom, peaking at #2 overall, and performing strongly in Ireland and Iceland as well. whats-on-netflix

What Netflix’s CEO Says About Podcasts?

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos recently explained the platform’s podcasting pivot: “What they don’t want is the overproduced seven-minute couch interview on the talk show… They really want to hear this long freeform interview with their guard down, just a real casual conversation.” Early data also shows audiences are watching during the day — a time when streaming usually sees very little activity — and consuming more content on mobile than Netflix typically sees with other programming.

This is a genuine shift in how people interact with podcasting — and Netflix is smartly riding that wave.

What It Means for Netflix’s Future

The success raises a crucial question: will Netflix attempt to replicate this daily, sports-adjacent live format for other major global events going forward? With the World Cup knockout stages still ahead, the momentum is only building. whats-on-netflix
