Hiding Behind a Screen Won’t Save You: SM Entertainment Declares Zero Tolerance

The era of “it’s just an anonymous account” may be ending. On October 12, SM Entertainment issued a stern statement about legal action against defamation and sexual harassment aimed at its artists, and this time the company says it has the receipts.

SM’s Warning : Overview

What’s Different This Time?

SM says malicious content kept appearing even after its earlier notice. It pointed especially to provocative YouTube content that spreads distorted images of its artists. The company went after two groups: channels that habitually mock and defame artists, and accounts posting sexually harassing or abusive Shorts videos and comments.

Anonymity on overseas platforms, SM says, can no longer be a shield. With U.S. counsel on board, the agency is using discovery proceedings in American courts to unmask the people behind the accounts. The same process is under way against several X accounts.

Even Commenters Are in the Frame

This is the line that will get attention. SM says legal action will cover not only the accounts that posted the content but also users who joined in by commenting. It’s a clear message: dogpiling isn’t harmless.

Domestic Platforms Aren’t Safe Either

SM continues to monitor Korean anonymous communities, including several DC Inside galleries. It has filed criminal complaints over false information and derogatory insults, citing the Information and Communications Network Act and criminal insult. More complaints are in preparation.

Some earlier defendants were found guilty at first trial of defamation and insult. Appeals are ongoing, so SM won’t share details until the rulings are final.

Deleting a Post Won’t Undo It

SM says it submits all collected material to investigators even if posts are deleted, accounts are deactivated, or profiles go private. Fans are part of the process too. Reports sent through KWANGYA 119 help SM collect evidence in real time, and the company thanked fans and platform operators for cooperating.

Why It Matters for K-Pop?

Online abuse has become one of the industry’s biggest talking points, and fans have long asked agencies to do more than post a warning. A statement naming outside counsel, cross-border court action and a three-month evidence effort reads more like a plan than a threat. Whether it works will depend on the court outcomes, which can take a long time.
