Harry Potter Series Trailer: The Wizarding World Returns This Christmas. Nineteen years after Harry Potter first walked onto movie screens, HBO has pulled back the curtain on something entirely new. Harry Potter Series: Quick Facts

What the Harry Potter Series Trailer Shows Us

The two-minute trailer opens exactly where the story began: a young Harry crammed into his cupboard under the stairs at the Dursleys’. From there, it moves through the beats fans know by heart—Hagrid’s dramatic arrival, the first trip to Diagon Alley, and the unforgettable dash through Platform 9¾. Ron Weasley’s iconic Hogwarts Express line, “Are you really Harry Potter?”, lands right on cue, alongside fresh glimpses of Quidditch practice, Potions class, and Harry’s first encounters with Dumbledore, Snape, McGonagall, and Hagrid.

Meet the New Trio

Dominic McLaughlin steps into the role of Harry Potter, joined by Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. Supporting them is a genuinely stacked adult ensemble: John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, with Warwick Davis reprising his original film role as Filius Flitwick.

Why a Series Instead of Another Film Franchise?

Harry Potter Series Trailer: The ambition here is different from the original movies. Each season is designed to adapt one of J.K. Rowling’s seven novels in full, giving storylines room that the original film franchise—despite grossing $7.7 billion globally—never quite had time to explore. Showrunner Francesca Gardiner, an Emmy winner for Succession, was selected after a four-month process that included Rowling’s own input, and has spoken about personally identifying with Hermione Granger.

The Voldemort Question Remains Open

One major mystery still lingers: who will play Lord Voldemort? While no casting has been confirmed, speculation has centered on Cillian Murphy, an idea reportedly backed by original film villain Ralph Fiennes himself. Expect this to remain one of the most-discussed unknowns as the show approaches its December debut.

The Elephant in the Room

The trailer’s release has inevitably reignited conversation around J.K. Rowling’s continued involvement as executive producer, given her widely criticized comments on transgender issues. Several cast members have publicly distanced themselves from her views, even as the production moves forward.

Final Thoughts

With its Christmas Day premiere now just months away, the Harry Potter series trailer signals HBO’s clear intent: this isn’t a quick nostalgia grab, but a long-term, prestige-television reimagining of one of the best-selling stories ever told. Whether it can live up to nearly two decades of cinematic memory remains to be seen—but based on this trailer, the wizarding world is ready to cast its spell once again.

Watch Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone when it premieres December 25, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max.
