India is set to manufacture passenger aircraft on home soil after 37 years. First Complete Aircraft Made in India Since 1988

This marks the first time a complete passenger aircraft will be produced in India since HAL’s AVRO HS-748 project, which ran from 1961 to 1988. Unlike component assembly or maintenance operations, HAL will manufacture the entire SJ-100 aircraft domestically—a quantum leap for India’s aerospace capabilities.

The SJ-100 is a proven platform with over 200 units operational globally across 16 commercial airlines. Under the agreement, HAL gains manufacturing rights for domestic customers, positioning the aircraft as a game-changer for short-haul connectivity under India’s UDAN scheme, which aims to connect smaller cities with affordable air travel.

Solving India’s Regional Aviation Gap

Industry estimates suggest India will need over 200 regional jets over the next decade for domestic connectivity, plus an additional 350 aircraft for Indian Ocean region routes and nearby international tourist destinations. The SJ-100’s twin-engine, narrow-body design makes it perfect for these short-haul routes where larger aircraft prove uneconomical.

Current regional connectivity relies heavily on turboprop ATRs or undersized jets. The SJ-100 fills the critical 100-seat category gap, offering jet speed and comfort on routes under 1,500 km—ideal for connecting tier-2 and tier-3 cities to metro hubs.

Strengthening India-Russia Aerospace Ties

The announcement comes ahead of President Vladimir Putin’s scheduled visit to India in December, reinforcing decades of defense and aerospace collaboration between the two nations. HAL and UAC have partnered on multiple military aircraft projects, making this civilian aviation expansion a natural progression.
