Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai Box Office Reality Check: Varun Dhawan’s Comeback Wait Continues

Sometimes the numbers tell a story louder than any review ever could — and for Varun Dhawan’s latest comedy, that story is looking increasingly tough. Despite a decent opening, “Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai” has hit a steep second-weekend slump.

“Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai,” starring Varun Dhawan, Mrunal Thakur, and Pooja Hegde, collected Rs 2.75 crore on its second Sunday, closing its second weekend at Rs 6.85 crore nett, marking a 70 per cent drop from its opening weekend. Directed by David Dhawan, the comedy drama is clearly struggling to hold its audience into week two.

Where Does the Film Go From Here?

The running total now stands at Rs 42.75 crore nett at the Indian box office, with the film looking to surpass the Rs 45 crore mark in a couple of days before heading toward its final target, and based on current trends it’s expected to wind up its run around the Rs 50 crore nett mark, lower than Dhawan’s previous release “Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari.”

The verdict from trade circles is fairly clear: the movie has flopped at the box office, and fans will have to wait longer for Varun Dhawan’s comeback hit. pinkvilla

A Familiar Pattern in Bollywood

Steep second-weekend drops have become increasingly common in Bollywood releases, especially for comedies that rely heavily on opening-weekend novelty rather than sustained word-of-mouth. A 70% decline signals weak audience retention, something trade analysts watch closely when predicting a film’s overall theatrical lifespan.
