Gulveer Singh Runs Into History: India’s First Double Track Medallist at CWG 2026

At the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, the 28-year-old Army runner became the first Indian athlete ever to win two track and field medals at a single CWG edition. First came silver in the men’s 10,000m. Then, days later, a nerve-shredding bronze in the 5000m — won by just 0.04 seconds over Kenya’s Cornelius Kemboi.

For a country better known for its throwers and jumpers on the CWG track circuit, Gulveer’s double is a genuine breakthrough for Indian distance running.

CWG Historic Double: Race by Race

Gold in the 5000m went to Kenya’s Mathew Kipsang (13:23.61), while Australia’s Ky Robinson claimed the 10,000m gold in 27:48.93.

Not Satisfied — Yet

Despite the historic achievement, Gulveer was refreshingly honest about wanting more: “Not happy. I want to hear the national anthem for my country,” he said after the 5000m race. It’s the mindset of an athlete who sees medals as milestones, not destinations — and it’s exactly the hunger that’s fuelling India’s rise in athletics right now. Why This Matters for Indian Athletics

Gulveer isn’t a one-off. He’s the reigning Asian champion in both the 5000m and 10,000m, and his consistency at the international level signals a genuine shift in India’s long-distance running pedigree — a discipline the country has historically struggled to crack on the global stage.
