Santa Monica Studio confirmed that the original God of War trilogy is being remade during Sony’s February 2026 State of Play. Original Kratos voice actor TC Carson announced the project, marking a major surprise as the franchise approaches its 20th anniversary in March 2026.

The remake encompasses God of War, God of War II, and God of War III—bringing Kratos’ brutal Greek saga to modern platforms with cutting-edge visuals and gameplay enhancements.

Early Development Means Long Wait

The project remains in very early development, meaning fans should expect a lengthy wait before more information surfaces. According to Santa Monica Studio, “We ask for your patience as it will be a while before anything else can be shared. When we can come back with an update, we aim to make it a big one!”

TC Carson emphasized this timeline in his announcement: “But I’m telling you, next time we come back, [we’re] coming with something big, baby.” The teaser trailer showed only a fiery logo without gameplay, cinematics, or release window details.

Industry observers suggest the trilogy won’t materialize until 2027 or 2028 at earliest, following Sony’s typical pattern of announcing games two to three years before release.

What the God of War Trilogy Remake Includes

Game	Original Release	Platform	Key Features
God of War	March 2005	PS2	Kratos’ origin story
God of War II	March 2007	PS2	Betrayal of Zeus
God of War III	March 2010	PS3	Destruction of Olympus
Trilogy Remake	TBA (2027-2028)	PS5, likely PC	Modern visuals & gameplay

Santa Monica Studio stated this remake goes beyond simple graphical upgrades, aiming for full modernization with updated asset quality, rebuilt environments, and refined combat mechanics. The announcement reflects fan requests that have been “frequent” according to the studio.

Grace Orlady, Lead Community Manager at Santa Monica Studio, noted, “We know that remaking the Greek saga has been a frequent request – the genuine, passionate interest from fans to see the original games return is something we’re very thankful for.”

Gameplay Philosophy Question

Currently unknown is whether the trilogy will retain the original spectacle-fighter formula or adapt the modern over-the-shoulder camera and combat system introduced in God of War (2018). This decision significantly impacts how the games feel to play.

The classic games featured fixed camera angles and combo-heavy button-mashing combat, while the Norse saga shifted to intimate third-person perspective with methodical, deliberate combat. Stellar Blade’s 2024 success—selling over six million copies—proves market demand for refined spectacle fighters still exists.

TC Carson Returns as Original Kratos

TC Carson’s involvement extends beyond the announcement. He serves as narrator in the surprise shadow-dropped title God of War: Sons of Sparta, a 2D action platformer developed by Mega Cat Studios that launched immediately for $29.99.

Sons of Sparta explores Kratos’ youth during brutal Agoge training alongside his brother Deimos, featuring hand-drawn pixel animation and combat adapted to 2D gameplay with spear, shield, and divine Gifts of Olympus artifacts.
