Glen Powell Officially Addresses Kurt Russell Action Remake Reports 2 Years Later

Glen Powell has finally addressed reports of a Kurt Russell action remake, two years after they first surfaced, and his answer changes how we should view the project. The untitled firefighter film Powell is attached to is reportedly an original—not a Backdraft-style remake.

That distinction sounds minor until you follow the money. A remake comes with built-in awareness, a pre-sold title, and an unavoidable comparison problem. An original has none of those advantages—and Powell, fresh off Top Gun: Maverick‘s $1.4 billion global gross, has enough leverage to choose which path he wants.

The Problem: A Two-Year-Old Rumor That Wouldn’t Die

The trouble began around mid-2024, when trade chatter connected Powell to a Kurt Russell action remake. The logic seemed almost too neat: the same genre, the same subject, and the same rising star.

That neatness helped the story stick. For two years, people repeated it as though the project were confirmed, shaping how audiences viewed Powell’s slate before anyone had shot a frame. Recent reports suggest Powell has now set the record straight.

Root Cause: Why the Remake Reading Won

Here’s the thing: Hollywood’s reporting ecosystem rewards pattern-matching. Pair a director returning to a genre he helped define with a star who has become the industry’s default leading man, and the headline practically writes itself.

No confirmation was necessary—the story already had the right shape. Worth noting, the firefighter genre has no other modern touchstone. Any reported firefighter project gets folded into that comparison by default. Powell’s clarification doesn’t erase that pull; it simply separates the two projects on paper.

The Options, and What Each One Costs

Option one: treat it as a remake. The upside is free marketing: a known title, a nostalgia hook, and a Kurt Russell connection that could sell tickets. The downside is harsh: every review becomes a comparison, while Powell inherits a role Russell made his own.

He has explicitly ruled that out. Option two: treat it as an original and stay quiet. That preserves creative freedom, but silence allowed the rumour to run for two years and settle into assumed fact. Option three: lean into the practical-film hook. Powell has said he’s excited to shoot fire practically, echoing the way Top Gun: Maverick put its cast in real jets. That offers a real point of difference in a CGI-saturated market, though it also brings higher costs, safety risks, and a slower shoot. For more detail, see VentureBeat AI.

What’s Next: The Verdict

If the goal is a franchise hook, the remake comparison provides free advertising. If the goal is a clean original, Powell did the right thing by shutting it down—even two years late. For more detail, see OpenAI Blog.

The firefighter film now rests on Powell’s name and the studio’s, not on a 1991 title. Powell’s slate offers the clearest signal. Anyone But You arrived in December 2023 and showed he could open a rom-com without a franchise behind it, while Maverick proved he could carry a strong lead in action films.
