Glasgow Roars Back: Commonwealth Games 2026 Kicks Off in Style

The XXIII Commonwealth Games officially opened in Glasgow, Scotland on 23 July 2026, and the city is buzzing again with the sound of anthems, cheering crowds, and record chases. Athletes from 74 Commonwealth Games Associations are expected, competing in 215 events across 11 sports, making this one of the most action-packed editions in recent memory.

What Happened on Day One?

The Games began with a grand opening ceremony, followed swiftly by real competition. India’s 124-member contingent, led by flag-bearers Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain, marked a proud moment for the country. On the field, India’s hockey team opened strongly with a 2-0 win over South Africa, while powerlifters Jaspreet Kaur and Suman Devi impressed early, with Suman lifting 100kg on her first attempt. Gymnastics also saw India in action across team and individual rounds, keeping medal hopes alive from day one itself.

Elsewhere, the athletics track promises fireworks with stars like Jamaican sprinter Shericka Jackson, home favourite Josh Kerr, and javelin rivals Neeraj Chopra and Arshad Nadeem set to headline. Swimming, boxing, judo, netball, and lawn bowls are also running in parallel, giving fans a packed schedule daily until the closing ceremony on 2 August.
