June has found a new protégée — Daisy, a Toronto teen whose parents were killed by Gilead agents for working with Mayday. At June’s behest, Daisy enters Gilead posing as a “Pearl Girl,” a new recruit from outside Gilead’s borders, at Aunt Lydia’s elite preparatory academy — where she comes face-to-face with Agnes McKenzie, the Gilead name for Hannah, June and Luke’s daughter.

It’s been four years since the War of Massachusetts, the Mayday-led event near the end of The Handmaid’s Tale. Gilead purged those it found subversive in the aftermath, and Aunt Lydia emerged as a legend — worshipped, then vilified, then worshipped again. She also has a new pet project: the Pearl Girls, white-clad converts from outside Gilead who are young, fertile, and — per Agnes — not to be trusted.
