Game Awards 2025 Highlights

Record-Breaking Night for Clair Obscur

Sandfall Interactive’s Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 shattered records by claiming Game of the Year alongside Best Game Direction, Art Direction, Narrative, Debut Indie, and Best RPG. The melodramatic, mechanically innovative French RPG received both the most nominations and wins in The Game Awards history, cementing its place as a landmark achievement in independent game development.

Star Wars Makes a Comeback

The show opened with Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, directed by Mass Effect and original Knights of the Old Republic creator Casey Hudson through his new studio Arcanaut. This spiritual successor promises to recapture the magic that defined BioWare’s golden era. Additionally, UK studio Fuse Games unveiled Galactic Racers, a Star Wars-themed racing game bringing pod racing vibes back to the franchise.

Larian’s Ambitious Return to Divinity

Following Baldur’s Gate 3’s massive success, Larian Studios revealed their next RPG simply titled Divinity—not Divinity: Original Sin 3, but an entirely new entry. The studio claims it will be even larger than Baldur’s Gate 3, featuring a body horror-filled cinematic trailer that rivals BG3’s unsettling opening. This mysterious desert statue tease finally makes sense as fans prepare for Larian’s most ambitious project yet.

Horror and Action Dominate

Capcom confirmed Leon S. Kennedy’s appearance in Resident Evil Requiem, delighting fans of the beloved RE4 protagonist. Frictional Games announced Ontos, a spiritual successor to SOMA starring Golden Globe winner Stellan Skarsgård, slated for 2026. Remedy Entertainment surprised everyone with Control Resonant, an open-world action-RPG set in Manhattan featuring Dylan Faden instead of Jesse.

S-Game’s Phantom Blade Zero locked in a September 9, 2026 release date with stunning new gameplay showcasing multiple fighting styles. The night closed with Highguard, a free-to-play fantasy FPS from Wildlight Entertainment—comprised of former Respawn developers behind Apex Legends and Titanfall—launching January 26, 2026.

Legendary Franchises Return

Capcom stunned audiences with Mega Man: Dual Override, marking the iconic platformer’s return in 2027 for all platforms including Switch 2. Nioh 3 arrives February 6, 2026, with a demo dropping January 29. Jonathan Blow’s Order of the Sinking Star promises 1,000 unique puzzles across four worlds, while Wizards of the Coast unveiled Dungeons & Dragons: Warlock and showed Exodus gameplay featuring Matthew McConaughey.

Other standout announcements included 4:Loop from Left 4 Dead creator Mike Booth, Coven of the Chicken Foot from ex-Naughty Dog director Bruce Straley, and South of Midnight expanding to PlayStation 5 and Switch 2.
