How the Announcement Happened

Geoff Keighley confirmed the reveal through an unexpected channel—a fan vote within a Fortnite map portal. The official Tomb Raider account teased fans: “Did you miss her? She missed you.” Keighley promised viewers “a look at the future of one of gaming’s most iconic franchises.”

The teaser image shows Lara Croft’s silhouette wielding iconic dual pistols, surrounded by mysterious ancient technology. While the visual style appears closer to classic Lara, it’s unclear whether this signals a new direction or simply represents her Fortnite design.

What We Know About the New Game

Crystal Dynamics announced active development in April 2022, confirming the shift from their proprietary Foundation Engine to Unreal Engine 5. Amazon Games secured publishing rights and later purchased movie/TV rights, suggesting an interconnected universe spanning games, shows, and films.

Dated rumors from May 2024 mention an Indian setting and open-world map allowing Lara to explore via motorcycle. However, nothing official has emerged beyond engine confirmation until now.

Studio Challenges and Recent Layoffs

Crystal Dynamics faced multiple layoff rounds recently, including cuts just weeks ago. The studio stated these “painful choices” aim to “optimize the continued development of our flagship Tomb Raider game” while shaping the studio for future projects.

The layoffs concerned fans after seven years of waiting, but Thursday’s reveal should clarify the game’s status and scope.

Possible Remake Announcement Too?

Some insiders suggest a Tomb Raider (1996) remake could also debut at Game Awards 2025, potentially giving fans two major announcements. Whether Crystal Dynamics handles both projects or outsources the remake remains speculation.

Sophie Turner recently joined the Amazon TV series as Lara Croft, filming in 2026 for a likely 2027 premiere. Gamers hope to play the new title in 2026, given the franchise’s lengthy absence.
