FSSAI’s Liquor Shake-Up: Old Monk, McDowell’s Face Sales Halt

Your favourite peg might not be on the shelf right now — and there’s a very specific reason why. On August 3, 2026, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) ordered a halt on select variants of six well-known rum and whisky brands, and it has nothing to do with contamination or toxic ingredients.

What Actually Happened?

FSSAI’s action targets a labelling and standards issue: manufacturers allegedly used artificial or nature-identical flavours to mimic the taste of traditionally aged spirits, then marketed them as standard rum or whisky. The regulator says these should instead be labelled “Rum-flavoured Spirit” or “Whisky-flavoured Spirit.” Old Monk’s XXX blend also drew scrutiny for an age claim the regulator found misleading, since the product is largely made from neutral spirit rather than aged through maturation.

Importantly, this is a sale ban on specific manufacturing batches, not a nationwide recall of entire brands. If you own a bottle already, drinking it isn’t a safety concern.

FSSAI’s List of Banned Variants

Six more manufacturers in Maharashtra have received notices too, so this list could still grow.

Why It Matters

McDowell’s No.1 Celebration, manufactured by United Spirits Limited of India, overtook Old Monk as the country’s largest-selling rum in 2013 and went on to become the world’s biggest-selling rum brand by 2015. That scale is exactly why this order has landed so hard — these aren’t obscure regional labels, they’re market leaders sitting in millions of Indian homes. Wikipedia
