From Director’s Chair to Center Stage: Lokesh Kanagaraj’s “DC” Is a Blood-Pumping Debut

Lokesh Kanagaraj has spent years crafting some of Tamil cinema’s biggest action hits from behind the camera. Now, with DC, he steps in front of it — and the results are worth the wait. Directed by Arun Matheswaran and released in theaters on August 7, 2026, the film pairs Kanagaraj’s acting debut with Wamiqa Gabbi as co-lead, and it lands as a gripping, high-octane entertainer.

The Story

DC follows Devadas, a rebel who swindles the powerful alongside his crew to fight back against systemic injustice. When corrupt officers mistreat an innocent man, Devadas retaliates, triggering a manhunt against his group. Along the way, he crosses paths with Chandra (Wamiqa Gabbi), helping her escape a troubled life, and the two end up bound together as the story escalates.

What Works

The film takes its time in the first act, letting characters and world-building breathe before ramping up the stakes. That patience pays off — the emotional core stays intact even as the action intensifies, something many genre films skip entirely. Kanagaraj proves a natural on-screen presence, bringing the same intensity fans know from his directorial work in films like Kaithi and Vikram. Gabbi is equally compelling, giving Chandra genuine depth and stealing scenes with ease.

Composer Anirudh Ravichander deserves special mention — his score blends classical, rock, and country influences into one of the film’s strongest assets, elevating nearly every key sequence.

What Doesn’t

The film loses some momentum in the second half before the climax pulls it back together. It’s also unapologetically intense — viewers uncomfortable with graphic action should approach with caution.

DC loosely draws from the classic tale of Devdas, reimagined here as a rebellious action saga rather than a tragic romance, giving the story a distinct identity of its own.
