From Derry Girls to Belfast: Lisa McGee’s New Netflix Mystery Will Keep You Hooked

The creator of Derry Girls is back with another Northern Irish gem, and Netflix viewers are in for a wild, hilarious ride through mystery, friendship, and chaos.

Lisa McGee Show Overview

What’s the Story?

How to Get to Heaven From Belfast reunites three lifelong friends in their late 30s after the mysterious death of their estranged fourth friend, Greta. Saoirse (a TV writer), Robyn (stressed mom of three), and Dara (a carer) embark on a chaotic road trip across Northern Ireland that quickly transforms from a simple condolence visit into a murder mystery adventure.

The show brilliantly balances laugh-out-loud comedy with genuine suspense, reminiscent of Only Murders in the Building and Bad Sisters. If you loved Derry Girls, this series delivers the same sharp wit and Northern Irish charm with a darker, more mature twist.

Why You Should Watch

The Comedy is Pure Gold: Quick-witted dialogue, absurd situations, and character-driven humor make every episode entertaining. The show even features Father Ted veterans Ardal O’Hanlon and Michael Redmond, adding nostalgic comedic brilliance.

Strong Performances: The three leads share explosive chemistry that carries the entire series. Their personalities clash beautifully, creating both hilarious moments and genuine emotional depth.

Mystery That Keeps You Guessing: While the pacing occasionally stumbles toward the end, the mystery stays compelling throughout. The show prioritizes the journey over the destination—and what a journey it is, spanning Northern Ireland and even Portugal!

The Verdict

Lisa McGee proves once again why she’s one of the best storytellers capturing Northern Irish life. While this may not surpass Derry Girls as her masterpiece, How to Get to Heaven From Belfast stands strong as a love letter to friendship, loss, and chaos.

The mystery gets slightly convoluted near the finale, but the show’s contagious charm, sharp humor, and heartfelt exploration of friendship make it absolutely worth watching. Think of it as a Northern Irish odyssey wrapped in laughter, tears, and unexpected twists.
