From a Flop’s Sequel to a Career-Best: Awarapan 2’s Box Office Story So Far

Few sequels get made from a film that flopped on arrival. Fewer still turn into the lead actor’s biggest box office success. Awarapan 2 has managed both, and its numbers are now telling a quietly remarkable story as the film winds down its theatrical run.

Third Weekend Numbers

Awarapan 2 collected Rs. 3.50 crore in its third weekend, marking an 80% drop from the previous weekend despite a Buy-One-Get-One offer aimed at boosting footfalls. The discount clearly wasn’t enough to hold audience numbers steady, and the film has now clearly entered the final phase of its theatrical run.

With this weekend added in, the Emraan Hashmi starrer has reached Rs. 143.75 crore nett at the Indian box office. Based on current trends, the film is on track to close its total run near the Rs. 150 crore mark — a figure that would mark the career-best box office number of Hashmi’s career.

Why This Sequel’s Success Is Unusual

Awarapan 2 follows up on the 2007 original, which was a box office disaster on release before slowly building a cult following over the years. Its success comes at a moment when intense, music-driven love stories have found renewed audience appetite, a trend that reminded the industry of the kind of films Hashmi built his career on during the 2000s and early 2010s with hits like Murder 2, Raaz 3, and Jannat 2. After a career dip in the latter half of that decade, this box office run marks a significant comeback.

It also fits a broader pattern: last year saw older films like Sanam Teri Kasam and Laila Majnu turn into hits through theatrical re-releases. Awarapan 2 is essentially doing the same thing on a much larger scale, proving there’s little precedent for a sequel to a flop becoming an outright box office hit.
