First Time’s The Charm: Kartik Aaryan Wins His Maiden National Award

It’s a career-defining moment for Kartik Aaryan. The actor has bagged his first-ever National Award for Best Actor, honored for his transformative performance in the biographical sports drama Chandu Champion — and the win shares the spotlight with veteran star Mammootty this year.

For an actor who’s spent years building his name through commercial hits, this marks his first big step into serious critical recognition.

Kartik Aaryan : Overview

The Story Behind Chandu Champion

Chandu Champion tells the real-life story of Murlikant Petkar, India’s first Paralympic gold medallist. The film follows his journey from a small village in Maharashtra to the Indian Army, where he trained as a boxer before a life-altering injury changed his path entirely. Refusing to be defined by the setback, Petkar rebuilt his life through para swimming, eventually winning gold and setting a world record at the 1972 Summer Paralympics — a remarkable feat that, despite its scale, faded from public memory over the decades.

Kartik Aaryan’s portrayal of Petkar required a significant physical and emotional transformation, and it’s this performance that has now earned him his first National Award, in a genre of storytelling built around real, underrepresented sporting achievements, similar to the broader tradition of biographical sports films worldwide, as outlined on Wikipedia.

How Fans Are Reacting

The response online has been largely celebratory, though not without some spirited debate. Several fans called it a career-best performance and expressed hope that he continues choosing meaningful scripts going forward. Others were simply thrilled to see him honored, calling the performance outstanding.

Not everyone was fully convinced, though — one user questioned whether his performance outshone Prithviraj Sukumaran’s widely praised turn in Aadujeevitham, reflecting the kind of healthy debate that often follows major award announcements.

A Shared Spotlight

While this is Kartik Aaryan’s first National Award, it’s the fourth for Mammootty, who won for his performance in Bramayugam. The pairing of a rising Bollywood star’s breakthrough moment alongside a veteran actor’s record-extending achievement has made this year’s announcement particularly noteworthy.

Beyond Kartik Aaryan, Chandu Champion features a strong supporting cast including Vijay Raaz, Bhuvan Arora, Yashpal Sharma, Rajpal Yadav, Aniruddh Dave, Samyak Shringirishi, and Shreyas Talpade.
