What “The Altruists” Is Really About

The series follows the tumultuous romance between FTX co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried and his girlfriend Caroline Ellison, depicting their ambitious attempts to revolutionize the financial system, leading to a $36 billion fraud. This isn’t just another white-collar crime drama – it’s a love story wrapped in one of the most spectacular financial collapses of the 21st century.

The series comes from Higher Ground Productions and Vox Media Studios, with the plot being focused primarily on the love story between FTX co-founder and chief executive Sam Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison, making it as much a character study as a cautionary tale about unchecked ambition.

Production Timeline and Release Date

According to the latest production listings, filming began on July 1st, 2025, and will run through to November 24th, 2025, meaning a 2026 release date seems likely. This extended filming schedule suggests Netflix is taking its time to craft a comprehensive narrative that does justice to this complex story.

The series represents a significant investment for Netflix, following the streaming giant’s successful track record with true crime and financial scandal content.

Why This Series Matters Now

The timing couldn’t be more relevant. With cryptocurrency continuing to dominate headlines and regulatory discussions, “The Altruists” offers viewers a chance to understand how one of the industry’s most promising companies became its biggest cautionary tale.

Both Ellison and Bankman-Fried were indicted on various charges for their roles in FTX’s implosion, making this series particularly timely as the legal proceedings continue to unfold in real life.

Anthony Boyle’s Transformation

Julia Garner’s involvement adds another layer of excitement, especially given her Emmy-winning performance in “Ozark” and her recent portrayal of another infamous scammer in “Inventing Anna.”

Behind the Scenes Power Players

The series benefits from experienced showrunners and producers who understand the delicate balance required when adapting recent real-world events. Graham Moore, who once decoded Alan Turing, now turns his obsession to decoding Sam Bankman-Fried, with Jacqueline Hoyt beside him, bringing serious writing credentials to the project.

What to Expect from the Series

Based on the production scale and cast quality, “The Altruists” promises to be more than just another corporate scandal series. It’s positioning itself as a deep dive into the psychology of ambition, the allure of revolutionary technology, and the human cost of unchecked power.
