DC’s Lanterns Finally Gives First Look at John Stewart’s Green Lantern Ring (Photos)

Sometimes the smallest details tell the biggest story. Eagle-eyed fans watching HBO’s Lanterns discovered that John Stewart’s Green Lantern ring isn’t identical to Hal Jordan’s — and the show’s own prop master just confirmed it wasn’t an accident.

How the Discovery Happened?

The reveal started with a fan on Instagram who noticed something odd in Episode 3, “OutKast,” when John Stewart’s ring appeared on screen while he worked on his father’s watch. The fan pointed out that John’s ring featured a black band and silver trim, a clear departure from Hal Jordan’s gold-trimmed design.

What could have stayed pure fan speculation quickly became confirmed fact when Lanterns prop master Jeffrey Johnson responded directly in the comments, verifying that John’s ring really was different.

Lanterns : Comparing the Rings

Interestingly, it’s not just John and Hal — Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner reportedly has an even more distinct ring design, suggesting this may be a franchise-wide choice rather than a one-off detail.

Why Would DC Give Each Lantern a Different Ring?

There are a few theories floating around, and none have been officially confirmed by DC Studios yet. One practical explanation is simple identification — if a ring were ever separated from its owner, a unique design would make it easy to trace back. But fans are also reading deeper symbolism into the choice: John’s darker ring could reflect his difficult upbringing, while Guy’s brighter design may mirror his more comedic personality. Some have even speculated that Hal’s gold trim could foreshadow a future transformation into the villain Parallax.

Whatever the reasoning, the level of detail suggests DC Studios is treating even small props as meaningful storytelling tools rather than simple costume pieces.
