Just when you thought the Fast & Furious franchise had nowhere left to go after 25 years and $7 billion at the box office, Vin Diesel pulled up with the kind of announcement that breaks the internet. The ride is officially moving to television — and in a very big way.

What Was Announced on Fast & Furious? The Fast Facts

At NBCUniversal’s upfront presentation in New York, Vin Diesel announced that four Fast & Furious shows are heading to Peacock, with the franchise officially expanding into live-action television after years of fan demand for deeper stories centred on legacy characters.

Why Now? Diesel Explains the Long Wait

Diesel spoke about being protective of the Fast & Furious brand, which even made him originally turn down doing a sequel to the original movie. He said: “Over the last decade, we’ve realized that the fans have wanted more — they wanted us to expand the legacy characters, their stories. And for the last decade, the desire has been for us to enter the TV space.”

He credited Universal Studios chief Donna Langley taking oversight of NBCUniversal’s TV operation as the turning point: “That’s when I knew that the integrity of the characters, the international appeal, what makes us all feel like family would be protected in the TV space.”

The franchise already has an animated footprint — the DreamWorks animated series Fast & Furious: Spy Racers on Netflix follows Dom’s cousin, Tony Toretto, with Diesel, Moritz, and Morgan serving as executive producers.

This year also marks a major milestone. The 25th anniversary of the franchise is being celebrated with a special screening of the original 2001 film at the Cannes Film Festival, attended by Diesel and Neal Moritz. The Hollywood Reporter

The Fast & Furious franchise is one of the highest-grossing film series in history — and now it’s gunning to conquer TV too.
