Failed Messi Transfer: Inter Milan’s €500m Bid That Never Even Got Opened

Failed Messi Transfer: Some transfer stories become legendary not because they happened, but because of how spectacularly they didn’t. Former Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti has revealed the details of arguably football’s most audacious rejected bid — a staggering €500 million offer for Lionel Messi in 2012, made while the Argentine was still at the peak of his Barcelona powers.

An Offer Too Big to Refuse — Except He Did

Speaking on Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli, Moratti didn’t hold back on just how ambitious Inter’s pursuit was. “I did something crazy in 2012. I made Messi an offer of €500 million. In that year, that figure was crazy,” he admitted. To put that in perspective, it would have shattered every transfer record in football history by a distance that still hasn’t been matched over a decade later.

Lionel Messi Didn’t Even Open the Letter

What makes this failed Messi transfer story remarkable isn’t just the size of the offer — it’s how little interest Messi showed in even considering it. Moratti sent his vice-president to Barcelona to formally negotiate, but the deal never progressed past square one. “Messi didn’t even open the letter or get to know the offer,” Moratti revealed. “He rejected it without knowing the details and considered himself a player who would not be sold to any team throughout his career.”

“I Want to Retire at Barcelona”

Moratti eventually managed to speak with Messi directly, hoping a personal appeal might change things. The response was final: “I appreciate your interest in me, but I want to retire at Barcelona,” Messi reportedly told him.

Not the First Attempt

This wasn’t Inter’s only swing at Messi. Former Barcelona president Joan Laporta previously confirmed the club rejected an earlier €250 million Inter bid back in 2006, when Messi was still emerging through La Masia. Ironically, Moratti believes that early interest actually accelerated Messi’s rise, pushing Barcelona to fast-track his promotion to the first team to avoid losing him.

A Loyalty That Defined an Era

Messi would go on to spend 17 trophy-laden years at Barcelona before eventually departing in 2021 — a move driven by financial regulations rather than any lack of devotion. Inter’s failed pursuit stands as one of football’s great “what if” stories, a reminder that even the biggest cheque books couldn’t buy a bond as strong as Messi’s with Barça.
