The Heartbreaking Ending Explained

After Jae-won’s death from his hereditary heart condition, Seo-yoon’s anterograde amnesia mysteriously heals. She can finally retain memories—but feels she’s forgotten something crucial.

Ji-min shows Seo-yoon her diary entries and Jae-won’s glass cutout sketches covering her walls. Reading about their relationship triggers an emotional flood. The final scene shows Seo-yoon visiting Jae-won’s father, who gives her his son’s glass figure, explaining Jae-won wanted a part of himself to remain with her. Overcome with emotion, Seo-yoon finally mourns properly.

Why Their Love Story Worked Despite the Tragic Ending

What began as fake dating to stop bullying transformed into genuine love. Jae-won, living with a fatal heart condition, chose to love Seo-yoon completely despite knowing she’d forget him nightly. The film beautifully captures how love transcends memory—Seo-yoon’s decisions became instinctively guided by feelings she couldn’t consciously recall.

Is This Movie Worth Watching?

Absolutely, if you love slow-burn emotional romances. The film prioritizes quiet moments and daily routines over dramatic twists. Choo Young-woo’s film debut delivers surprising maturity as the devoted Jae-won, while Shin Si-ah’s portrayal of Seo-yoon balances innocence with the pain of constant loss.

The Korean remake adds subtle improvements over the original Japanese version, which drew 1.21 million viewers in Korea alone. Director Kim Hye-young’s careful attention to small gestures creates emotional depth that resonates long after credits roll.

Fair warning: this isn’t a happy ending. Jae-won dies, and Seo-yoon regains her memory only after losing him. But the film argues beautifully that love endures even when remembrance doesn’t.
