A22 Sports have revealed the new format of the European Super League, which now can’t be blocked by UEFA after the ruling by the European Court for Justice.
The new format consists of three leagues, the Star, Gold and Blue leagues, played alongside the domestic leagues. The Star and Gold leagues consist of 16 teams each while the Blue league will consist of 32 teams. There will be at least 14 guaranteed matches in the European Super League, and it will result in guaranteed income for clubs as well as European exposure.
European Super League format revealed after massive court verdict
The first season’s teams will be chosen based on a transparent selection system. From thereon, the competition will be based on merit and will also include a promotion and relegation system between the three tiers, similar to that of the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League.
Promotion to the Blue League will depend on domestic league performance, and reaffirms that there will be no permanent members in the three leagues.
There will also be a women’s counterpart, consisting of two leagues with 16 teams each. This is in contrast to the Women’s Champions League, which is held every season with 72 total teams, while 16 make the group stage.
Even though the court has ruled that UEFA can’t stop the European Super League, clubs and official bodies from across the continent have stepped up to reject the tournament. Barcelona and Real Madrid, however, remain committed to the cause of doing away with the Champions League. But with the mass rejection of the tournament, it might be impossible for it to become a reality.
