Fans expected fireworks from Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s post-credits scene, given that it’s the last MCU movie before Avengers: Doomsday. Some hoped for a Doctor Doom cameo. What they got was a quiet app notification.
Endgame: Two Scenes, Two Very Different Jobs
| Brand New Day stinger | Endgame: Encore mid-credits scene | |
|---|---|---|
| Focus | Ned’s Spidey Tracker app | Bruce Banner’s fate |
| Big reveal | Spider-Man is headed to space | Doom arrives to “collect” Banner |
| Doomsday link | Unclear | Direct |
| Fan reaction | Lackluster | Far more exciting |
What the Encore Scene Shows?
Banner has locked himself two miles underground in a military complex after his first Hulk-out in over a decade. He’s experimenting with a gamma suppression serum. Then the lights glitch, and Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom appears in a bright green glow, saying he’s come to collect him.
It explains where Banner went, makes Doom feel properly menacing, and hints Hulk will matter in the Avengers films. As The Direct points out, those beats might have worked even better at the end of Brand New Day, which drew a huge audience.
Why Brand New Day Set Up So Little
There are a few likely reasons:
- A short runway. Marvel dropped The Kang Dynasty and pivoted to Doomsday only in 2024.
- Tight timing. Just five months separate Spider-Man 4 and Avengers 5.
- Overlapping production. Most of the film’s cast is reportedly sitting out Doomsday, so Marvel may have avoided teasing payoffs it couldn’t deliver.
- A different priority. The film laid more groundwork for the X-Men reboot than for the Avengers films.
Conclusion
Marvel often uses post-credits scenes to clear up loose ends. The Marvels, for example, later confirmed where Monica Rambeau ended up. Endgame: Encore just does the same job for Doomsday, and adds a re-release payday. Maybe a movie focused on being great, rather than on setup, is exactly what the MCU needs.
