Emmy Awards 2026 Full Winners List: Widow’s Bay Sweeps, The Pitt Defends Best Drama, and History Gets Rewritten Twice

Some awards nights just hand out trophies. This one rewrote the record books. The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards delivered one of the most historic ceremonies in recent memory — a comedy sweeping records, an actor pulling off a feat no man has done before, and a five-time consecutive win that quietly became one of television’s most remarkable streaks.

Held at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles and hosted by Mariska Hargitay, the night belonged to Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay, while The Pitt proved its Best Drama win last year was no fluke.

Emmy Awards 2026: Key Winners

Widow’s Bay Rewrites the Record Books

Widow’s Bay didn’t just win — it dominated. The show took home six major Primetime Emmys, including the night’s biggest prize, Outstanding Comedy Series. Matthew Rhys won Lead Actor, Stephen Root and Kate O’Flynn claimed the supporting acting categories, and the show swept both directing (Hiro Murai) and writing (Katie Dippold) honors. Combined with eight wins at the earlier Creative Arts Emmys, the show finished its season with a staggering 14 total trophies — officially surpassing The Studio’s previous record of 13 Emmys for a comedy series in a single year.

Matthew Rhys and Jean Smart Make History

Matthew Rhys became the standout individual story of the night, winning both Lead Actor in a Comedy Series (Widow’s Bay) and Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie (The Beast in Me) — making him the first male performer ever to win two lead acting Emmys in the same year.

Jean Smart matched that historic energy with her fifth consecutive Lead Actress win for Hacks, making her the first performer in Emmy history to win an acting award for every single season of a show’s run. Her total acting Emmy count now stands at eight.

The Pitt Holds Its Ground

Despite fierce competition and 25 total nominations, The Pitt successfully defended its Outstanding Drama Series title, with Noah Wyle also repeating as Lead Actor in a Drama for the second year running. Pluribus picked up major wins elsewhere, with Rhea Seehorn taking Lead Actress and Vince Gilligan winning for Drama Writing — showing the drama race was far from a one-show affair this year.

DTF St. Louis Pulls Off the Limited Series Upset

DTF St. Louis had already built momentum with six Creative Arts Emmy wins, and it carried that into the main ceremony, winning Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series along with Directing and Writing. David Harbour and Linda Cardellini took home the supporting acting honors for the show. Meanwhile, Sally Field earned her fourth career Emmy for Remarkably Bright Creatures, adding another milestone to a six-decade acting career.
