East Bengal Triumph 2-1: Diamantakos’ Masterclass Sinks Mohun Bagan in Electric Derby Thriller

The iconic Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan erupted in a sea of red and gold as East Bengal delivered a masterful performance to defeat arch-rivals Mohun Bagan Super Giant 2-1 in the Durand Cup 2025 quarterfinal on Sunday evening. In a match that epitomized everything magical about the Kolkata derby, Greek striker Dimitrios Diamantakos emerged as the hero with a stunning brace that sent the Red and Gold Brigade into raptures.

The Drama Unfolds at Salt Lake Stadium

From the opening whistle at 7:00 PM IST, East Bengal showcased the kind of intensity and passion that makes the Kolkata derby one of football’s most electrifying encounters. The 134th edition of the Durand Cup witnessed another chapter in this century-old rivalry, with East Bengal proving they were ready for the challenge despite an early setback.

The match began with an unexpected twist when East Bengal’s in-form Moroccan striker Hamid Ahdad suffered an injury in the 16th minute, forcing coach Oscar Bruzon to make an early substitution. However, what initially seemed like a devastating blow transformed into East Bengal’s greatest fortune as Diamantakos stepped up to deliver a performance that will be remembered for years.

First Half: East Bengal’s Tactical Supremacy

East Bengal dominated the opening exchanges with their 5-midfield formation proving superior to Mohun Bagan’s traditional 4-4-2 setup. The Red and Gold Brigade moved the ball with rhythm and composure, creating multiple opportunities while keeping their rivals at bay.

The breakthrough came in the 38th minute when Bipin Singh was brought down inside the penalty area, and referee pointed to the spot without hesitation. Diamantakos stepped up with ice-cold composure, sending Vishal Kaith the wrong way despite the goalkeeper’s correct guess of direction.

Second Half: Diamantakos’ Moment of Magic

The second half began with renewed vigor from both sides, but it was East Bengal who struck first. Just seven minutes after the restart, Diamantakos produced a moment of pure brilliance that showcased why he’s considered one of the finest strikers in Asian football.

The goal originated from a perfectly orchestrated move that demonstrated East Bengal’s tactical sophistication. Lalchungnunga’s cross-field pass found Edmund, who intelligently volleyed the ball back to Miguel Ferreira. The Brazilian playmaker, operating in the heart of Mohun Bagan’s half, displayed exceptional vision to thread a pass to Naorem Mahesh Singh, who in turn found Diamantakos lurking in the box.

The Greek striker’s clinical finish, taking a touch to control before unleashing a left-footed shot that deflected off Alberto Rodriguez, left Kaith with no chance and doubled East Bengal’s advantage.

Mohun Bagan’s Spirited Fightback

Credit must be given to Mohun Bagan for their resilient response. Jose Molina’s tactical adjustments, including the introduction of Jason Cummings, Dimitrios Petratos, Dippendu Biswas, and Deepak Tangri, injected fresh energy into the Mariners’ attack.

The breakthrough came in the 68th minute through Anirudh Thapa’s spectacular long-range effort. The midfielder’s curling shot from distance beat Prabhsukhan Gill convincingly, igniting hope among the green and maroon faithful and setting up a thrilling finale.

Defensive Heroics Seal the Victory

The final twenty minutes witnessed East Bengal’s defensive resilience under immense pressure. Kevin Sibille’s crucial goal-line clearance from Jamie Maclaren’s close-range attempt epitomized the team’s determination to protect their lead.

Ashish Rai came agonizingly close to equalizing with a thunderous shot from a tight angle, but Gill’s fingertip save preserved East Bengal’s advantage. The Red and Gold defense, marshaled expertly by their Italian center-back, held firm despite Mohun Bagan’s relentless late assault.

Historical Context and Tournament Implications

This victory holds special significance for East Bengal, the 16-time Durand Cup champions, as they booked their place in the semifinals against Diamond Harbour FC. The result also ended Mohun Bagan Super Giant’s hopes of completing a domestic treble, having won both the ISL Shield and Cup last season.

The passionate support from both sets of fans created an atmosphere that reminded everyone why the Kolkata derby transcends sport itself. This match represented more than football – it was a cultural phenomenon filled with intense emotions and historical significance dating back over a century.
