Before Kim Ji-won’s Korean remake even airs, Netflix is giving fans a chance to experience the original. Doctor X, one of Japan’s most beloved medical dramas, is set to land globally on Netflix — and the timing couldn’t be more perfect for J-drama fans wanting to see where it all began.
When Does Doctor X Hit Netflix?

What’s The Show About?
Doctor-X: Surgeon Michiko Daimon is a Japanese medical drama that premiered in October 2012 on TV Asahi and ran for seven seasons until December 2021, totaling 69 episodes and one special. It’s widely considered one of the longest-running and most consistently popular medical dramas in Japanese television history.
The series follows Daimon Michiko, a freelance surgeon who moves between university hospitals across Japan, taking on impossible cases with unmatched surgical skill while keeping her personal life and the source of her expertise a total mystery to colleagues. Her signature line — “I never fail” — became a cultural catchphrase in Japan.
Lead actress Ryoko Yonekura, a Japanese actress and former fashion model, is best known for this very role, and it’s the performance that’s defined her career for over a decade.
Why It Matters Right Now
Netflix is clearly setting the stage: the original Japanese series arrives September 1, followed swiftly by the Korean adaptation starring Kim Ji-won on October 9. That gives fans over a month to experience the source material before the remake drops — a rare treat for anyone who loves comparing originals to their global reinterpretations.
