When South Africa chased, Deepti turned destroyer with the ball, claiming a magnificent five-wicket haul (5/39) that included the prized scalp of centurion Laura Wolvaardt. This made her the first Indian cricketer (men’s or women’s) to score a fifty and take five wickets in a World Cup final.

The Historic Achievement Explained

What makes Deepti’s record truly unprecedented is its rarity. While several cricketers have excelled with either bat or ball in World Cups, none have dominated both disciplines to this extent in a single tournament. The 200 runs-20 wickets double requires sustained excellence across all formats and match situations—a testament to Deepti’s world-class skills and mental strength.

For context, even legendary all-rounders in men’s cricket haven’t achieved this milestone, making Deepti’s accomplishment all the more remarkable in the sport’s history.
