David Dhawan’s Response to Varun Dhawan’s Border 2 Trolls Is the Most Dad Thing You’ll Read Today

Before Border 2 became one of the biggest box office successes of 2026, Varun Dhawan was drowning in trolling. The internet had made up its mind before the film even released. But when it did release — and became a massive commercial hit — the noise stopped almost instantly. Now, in an exclusive interview, his father and veteran filmmaker David Dhawan has finally responded to those trolls, and his answer is both sharp and deeply human.

David Dhawan: Overview

What David Dhawan Said About the Trolls?

The pre-release period for Border 2 was brutal for Varun Dhawan. Criticism poured in online, questioning his casting, his ability, and his place in the film. The industry largely came to his defence — and now so has his father.

David Dhawan responded to the negativity around his son’s performance in Border 2, saying all the trolling stopped after the film became a major box office success. Mocking the trolls, he said: “But kya hua? Sab ulat gaya na!” (But what happened? Everything fell flat, on their face!)

It’s a classic David Dhawan moment — no long speeches, no elaborate defence. Just a quiet, pointed observation that lets the results do the talking. And the results, in this case, spoke very loudly indeed.

A Father’s Advice to His Son

When asked what advice he gave Varun during the trolling period, David Dhawan shared: “Today, everything is work. I told him this will get over. Kuch din baad yehe log bolengi ki ye toh boht acha hai.” (After some days, these will be the only people who will say Varun is very good.)

That’s wisdom that comes from decades in an industry that is as unforgiving as it is rewarding. David Dhawan has seen the cycle enough times to know that the loudest critics before a release are often the quietest after a success.

He also spoke with visible emotion about Varun’s performance in the film itself. The veteran filmmaker said: “Uski last picture toh mujhey itni achi lagi thi. Uska kaam Border 2 mein… itna roya bhi hun main uss picture mein uske kaam se.” (His last film was so good. His work in Border 2… I even cried watching his performance.) A father moved to tears by his son’s work — that’s not PR. That’s real.

How David Dhawan Sees Varun’s Growth?

Sharing his thoughts on Varun’s evolution as an actor, David Dhawan said: “Definitely, he has improved and is on the right track. Aur vo apne kaam ki value jaanta hai. He respects the people around. He’s very careful and tries to give his best.”

This is a director who has worked with some of Bollywood’s most iconic performers across three decades — and to hear him speak about his own son with that same level of professional admiration is genuinely moving.

What’s Next for the Dhawan Duo

The father-son partnership continues. Varun Dhawan will next be seen in the romantic comedy Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, with Mrunal Thakur, Pooja Hegde, and Sreeleela as the female leads, and a large supporting cast including Maniesh Paul, Jimmy Shergill, Mouni Roy, and Chunky Panday — releasing May 22, 2026.
