Dan Levy Is Back on Netflix — and Big Mistakes Is Chaotic, Funny, and Desperate for a Season 2

If you’ve been wondering what Schitt’s Creek co-creator Dan Levy has been up to since his Emmy-winning run, the answer just landed on Netflix. Big Mistakes is his wildly entertaining new crime comedy — and while it doesn’t quite reach the heartfelt highs of Schitt’s Creek, it more than earns its spot in your weekend queue.

Big Mistakes — Overview

What Is Big Mistakes About?

The show follows two very different siblings — Nicky (Dan Levy), a queer community pastor, and Morgan (Taylor Ortega), a no-nonsense school teacher — who are thrown together after their grandmother’s death. When Morgan impulsively steals a necklace during a petty argument, the two quickly find themselves blackmailed into working for an organised crime cartel. What starts as mundane tasks like collecting drug money escalates rapidly into higher-stakes criminal chaos.

Meanwhile, their mother Linda (Laurie Metcalf, magnetic as ever) is running for mayor with their sister Natalie, adding a political subplot that — while the weakest part of the season — still delivers plenty of laughs through Metcalf’s fierce performance.

What Works and What Doesn’t?

The absolute heart of Big Mistakes is the sibling dynamic between Levy and Ortega. They’re electric together — sharp, funny, and brilliantly mismatched. Where Morgan is street-smart, Nicky is all spirit and zero restraint, and watching them clash is genuinely hilarious, especially in the physical comedy moments.

The humour is constant and confident, blending dry wit with clever one-liners and absurdist chaos. However, that’s also where the show occasionally trips itself — the comedy is so relentless that the crime stakes sometimes feel defanged. If you want a gritty mob thriller, this is not that. Think of it as closer in spirit to BEEF than The Sopranos.

As Wikipedia’s entry on crime comedy notes, the genre thrives when character-driven laughs and genuine tension coexist — and Big Mistakes gets that balance mostly right, if not perfectly.

The season ends on a satisfying twist with clear setup for more, and it genuinely needs a Season 2 to fulfil its potential. Think of Season 1 as an excellent pilot that’s still finding its full voice.
