In 2024, let’s find out the Companies with Most Number of US Patents in 2023

After 1993, this is the first time that IBM has not led the list of companies with the most US patents in the United States for new inventions and innovations. The new report has confirmed that Samsung is the new crown holder, as IBM came in second with 4,389. It shows that a staggering 49% of the 8,681 patents IBM won in 2021.

According to IFI Claims Patent Services, a subsidiary of London-based digital research technology company Digital Science, the recent advancements at the top of the patent ranking suggest a larger shift in innovation from the United States to Asia.

“Looking at the Top 50 alone, EFI’s data noted a shift from West to East,” the company declared in a press release. “In addition to Samsung’s ascendance, Asian-based companies on the list earned 14% more patents than Western countries in 2022 (41,055 vs. 35,365), far eclipsing Asia’s edge in 2021 of just 1%. Japan, China, and South Korea alone accounted for 40,114 patents, compared to 32,130 for United States companies.” 

Long-time Samsung rival Apple won 2,285 patents, down 10% from the prior year, while Amazon and Google won 1,863 and 1,548, respectively in the list of Companies with Most Number of US Patents.

We will see there are another American giant whose patent wins dipped significantly is Microsoft. The Redmond-based software company won 1,815 patents in 2022, but that’s down 25% from 2021’s 2,417.

Micron Technology, Inc. is an American producer of computer memory and computer data storage including dynamic random-access memory, flash memory, and USB flash drives. It is headquartered in Boise, Idaho. 

12. Samsung Display 

Number of U.S. Patents: 2,106 

Samsung Display, formerly S-LCD Corporation, is a South Korean manufacturer of OLED panels and formerly a manufacturer of amorphous TFT LCD panels, owned by Samsung Electronics. The company was established in April 2004 in Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea as a joint venture between Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd (51% share) and Sony Corporation 49% share.

Number of U.S. Patents: 2,795 

BOE Technology Group Co Ltd is a China-based supplier of internet of things technologies, products, and services. The reportable segments of the company are Display; Smart systems innovation business; Smart medicine and engineering business; Sensor and application solutions business; Mini-LED business and others. 

10. Toyota 

Number of U.S. Patents: 2,241 

Toyota Motor Corporation is a Japanese multinational automotive manufacturer headquartered in Toyota City, Aichi, Japan. On August 28, 1937, Kiichiro Toyoda founded it. Toyota is one of the largest automobile manufacturers in the world, producing about 10 million vehicles per year.

Number of U.S. Patents: 2,285 

Apple Inc. is an American multinational technology company headquartered in Cupertino, California, United States. Apple is the largest technology company by revenue and, as of June 2022, is the world’s biggest company by market capitalization, the fourth-largest personal computer vendor by unit sales, and the second-largest mobile phone manufacturer. It is one of the Big Five American information technology companies, alongside Alphabet, and Microsoft. 

8. Intel 

Number of U.S. Patents: 2,418 

Intel Corporation is an American multinational corporation and technology company headquartered in Santa Clara, California. It is the world’s largest semiconductor chip manufacturer by revenue and is one of the developers of the x86 series of instruction sets, the instruction sets found in most personal computers (PCs). Incorporated in Delaware Intel ranked No. 45 in the 2020 Fortune 500 list of the largest United States corporations by total revenue for nearly a decade, from 2007 to 2016 fiscal years. 

7. Qualcomm 

Number of U.S. Patents: 2,625 

Qualcomm is an American multinational corporation headquartered in San Diego, California, and incorporated in Delaware. It creates semiconductors, software, and services related to wireless technology. It owns patents critical to the 5G, 4G, CDMA2000, TD-SCDMA, and WCDMA mobile communications standards. 

6. LG 

Number of U.S. Patents: 2,641 

LG Electronics Inc. LG Electronics is a part of LG Corporation, the fourth largest chaebol in South Korea, and is often considered as the pinnacle of LG Corp with the group’s chemical and battery division LG Chem. It comprises four business units: home entertainment, mobile communications, home appliances & air solutions, and vehicle components.

Number of U.S. Patents: 2,694 

Canon is a Japanese multinational corporation headquartered in Ōta, Tokyo, Japan, specializing in optical, imaging, and industrial products, such as lenses, cameras, medical equipment, scanners, printers, and semiconductor manufacturing equipment. 

4. Huawei 

Number of U.S. Patents: 2,836 

Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. is a Chinese multinational technology corporation headquartered in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, that designs, develops, manufactures, and sells telecommunications equipment, consumer electronics, smart devices, and various rooftop solar power products. 

3. TSMC 

Number of U.S. Patents: 3,024 

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited is a Taiwanese multinational semiconductor contract manufacturing and design company. It is the world’s most valuable semiconductor company, the world’s largest dedicated independent, and one of Taiwan’s largest companies with its headquarters and main operations located in the Hsinchu Science Park in Hsinchu. It is majority owned by foreign investors.

The International Business Machines Corporation (IBM), nicknamed Big Blue is an American multinational technology corporation headquartered in Armonk, New York, with operations in over 175 countries. It specializes in computer hardware, middleware, and software, and provides hosting and consulting services in areas ranging from mainframe computers to nanotechnology. IBM is the largest industrial research organization in the world, with 19 research facilities across a dozen countries, and holds the record for most annual U.S. patents generated by a business for 29 consecutive years.

Samsung is a South Korean company that is one of the world’s largest producers of electronic devices. Samsung specializes in the production of a wide variety of consumer and industry electronics, including appliances, digital media devices, semiconductors, memory chips, and integrated systems.
