Coach: Commanders Fire TE Coach Ben Steele Following DWI

Why did the Washington franchise dismiss Ben Steele right before training camp?

The Commanders made a sudden move by firing tight ends coach Ben Steele on Monday, just two days before the official training camp began.

This unexpected change in the coaching staff sent ripples through the organization as they geared up for the upcoming season. According to ESPN, the team decided to part ways after a serious legal incident involving Steele earlier this summer.

“The organization holds all personnel to strict behavioral expectations both on and off the gridiron.”

With the preseason on the horizon, the timing of this decision couldn’t have been more crucial for an offensive unit aiming to gel together. Now, there are concerns about how this sudden change will impact the tight end room’s readiness.

What Commanders specific legal charges led to this sudden termination?

Court documents reveal that Steele’s legal troubles began on June 7 in Loudoun County, Virginia. Law enforcement arrested him after noticing he “changed course after signal.” Along with the initial arrest, he faced additional charges for refusing a standard breath or blood test and resisting or obstructing an officer without violence.

While his legal situation played out in court, the franchise acted quickly under its internal guidelines. They placed Steele on administrative leave right after they learned about the arrest and promptly notified the league. Given the strict policies regarding alcohol-related offenses in professional sports, there wasn’t much room for leniency here. What does this mean for the coaching staff as a whole?

How does this personnel change impact the team’s policy enforcement?

In recent years, major sports leagues have tightened their internal discipline, emphasizing public trust and community standards. The organization clearly stated that Steele’s firing resulted from a direct violation of team policy. By taking action before training camp kicked off, ownership made it clear that they have zero tolerance for actions that could damage the franchise’s reputation.

By cutting ties right away, the team avoided any distractions that might linger. This decisive approach sets a strong example for accountability at all levels of the organization. So, who’s next in line to fill the coaching vacancy?

Who will step into the tight ends coaching vacancy?

The leadership group in Ashburn expected to announce a replacement for Steele on Tuesday. Head coach Dan Quinn was ready to formally introduce the new assistant to the media and players ahead of the afternoon practice.
