College Student-only social network: Facebook Connect launches in the US

Facebook launches a new college student-centric social network platform named Facebook Campus. Two reasons are there behind launching this – the main one is maximum of the campuses are shifting (partly or fully) towards remote learning and the second part is this takes Facebook to its root as initially, Facebook was a college-only network.

For now, Facebook Campus rolled out for thirty universities in the US. There is no information regarding its launch in other countries. In the Facebook application, students will get a dedicated section for Facebook Campus. They need to create a separate profile for it providing their college email and graduation year. Other information like classes, home town, etc will be optional to fill.

The Campus will allow college students to reach the groups and events of their own college. In addition, obviously, all of them will get the opportunity to connect with their classmates having similar interests. In the case of post reach or visibility, Facebook says contents, shared on Campus will be visible to those particular colleges only, and if one blocked someone on Facebook, the same thing will be reflected on Campus too.

Charmaine Hung, Product Manager of Facebook Campus said, “College is a time for making new friends, finding people who share similar interests and discovering new opportunities to connect – from clubs to study groups, sports and more,” He added further, “In the early days, Facebook was a college-only network, and now we’re returning to our roots with Facebook Campus to help students make and maintain these relationships, even if they’re away from their college.”

The news feeds of the Facebook Campus will show only college-specific contents like the updates of the classmates, groups, and events. Besides, classmate directory and chat-room facilities are also offered. Some of the thirty colleges of the US are Brown University, California Institute of Technology, Johns Hopkins University, Sarah Lawrence College, and Virginia Tech. Students of these colleges will get the Facebook Campus available on their Facebook application.
