Every Coach Who Has Won A National League Title With East Bengal FC

East Bengal FC ended a 22-year-long wait to finally win another national league title after they clinched the 2025-26 Indian Super League (ISL) title on the final day of the tournament. With a thrilling 2-1 comeback win over Inter Kashi, the Torchbearers reached the pinnacle of Indian football once again to end Mohun Bagan SG’s run of winning the last two ISL titles. A lot of credit absolutely goes to head coach Oscar Bruzon, who worked hard in building a championship-winning squad and had them playing entertaining, attacking football all season long. But Bruzon is only the latest in a short but illustrious line of coaches who have guided the Red and Gold Brigade to national league glory.

In total, three coaches have now won national league titles with East Bengal FC across the NFL and ISL eras: Monoranjan Bhattacharya, Subhash Bhowmick and Oscar Bruzon.

1. Monoranjan Bhattacharya — The Pioneer (2000-01 NFL)

A bona fide Indian football legend, Monoranjan Bhattacharya enjoyed success with East Bengal as a player and manager. 1 In his time with the Torchbearers in the late 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, he won the Calcutta Football League title six times, the Federation Cup thrice, and the Durand Cup four times. The sturdy defender would also win the South Asian Games gold medal twice with the Indian football team in the 1980s. After retiring from football in 1993, Bhattacharya immediately started working on gaining his coaching qualifications.

In 1996, he would get his first breakthrough as the East Bengal coach, spending two years with them and helping them win the 1996 Federation Cup. He was brought back for a second stint in 2000, something which turned out to be prolific for the club. Monoranjan guided East Bengal to dominate the 2000-01 National Football League in what was a tight title race with Mohun Bagan. The Torchbearers, however, ultimately won the title on the final day by piping the Mariners to the title by only a single point. Thus, Monoranjan became the first manager to help East Bengal win a major national league title – something that will help his name stay in a special place in club history.

Monoranjan Bhattacharya — Profile

Monoranjan joined East Bengal Club in 1977 and created a club record for continuously representing the club in a period spanning 14 years. He was one of the most successful defenders of his time and was known for his strong and skillful game. As manager of East Bengal FC, Monoranjan Bhattacharya achieved significant success in the 2000–01 season, leading the team to their first-ever National Football League title and the Federation Cup. These victories marked a pivotal moment for the club, establishing dominance in national competitions during the early professional era of Indian football.

2. Subhash Bhowmick — The Back-To-Back King (2002-03 & 2003-04 NFL)

Subhash Bhowmick’s devotion to East Bengal club can never be doubted, and his contributions for the club as a player and manager gained him utmost praise. After Monoranjan Bhattacharya stepped down, another club legend Subhash Bhowmick was appointed as the head coach of the club. This was Bhowmick’s second stint with the club after 1999–00. Bhowmick took charge of the team and won back to back National Football League titles in 2002–03 and 2003–04. 

In 2002–03 season, Bhowmick led East Bengal to all five trophies the club participated in, the feat East Bengal club achieved back in 1972–73. The following season, Bhowmick made history as he led the East Bengal club to the 2003 ASEAN Club Championship title in Jakarta, defeating BEC Tero Sasana in the final. Bhowmick remains the only manager in East Bengal to guide them to two consecutive major league titles.

Subhash Bhowmick — Profile

During his second stint as coach, the club won a multitude of trophies including back to back NFL titles in 2002–03 and 2003–04, apart from Kolkata Football League, Durand Cup and IFA Shield victories. East Bengal also won the ASEAN Club Championship in Indonesia in 2003 under his managership. 

If East Bengal won back-to-back national league titles (2002-03 and 2003-04) or clinched the LG ASEAN Club Cup in 2003, the entire credit goes to Subhas Bhowmick. He won all the big trophies with East Bengal and established himself as an institution and was seen as a policymaker with supreme control. Bhowmick stepped down as coach of East Bengal in 2005 after being implicated in an alleged bribery scandal. Subhash Bhowmick (2 October 1950 – 22 January 2022) was an Indian football player and manager.

3. Oscar Bruzon — The 22-Year Wait Breaker (2025-26 ISL)

Bruzon has become the first foreign coach in East Bengal history to win a national league title and help the Torchbearers win their first ISL title as well! After Bhowmick helped East Bengal win their second straight national football league title in 2004, it seems as though some bad luck was placed on the club. The Torchbearers kept fighting hard to win the major league title after the creation of the I-League in 2007.

However, during their 13-year stay in the I-League, they failed to win the title even once – despite fighting hard in a few title races. They joined the ISL from 2020, acquiring one manager after another and making wholesale changes in their first five years – only to fail to win the title and mostly gain bottom-half finishes. Then, Oscar Bruzon arrived in 2024. The Spaniard wasn’t able to do all that much in his first season, as East Bengal finished the 2024-25 ISL campaign in ninth position, eight points adrift of a playoff spot.

But the transformation in 2025-26 was dramatic. 1East Bengal were able to win the ISL title on the superiority of goal difference and goals scored, as they netted more goals than any other club in the 2025-26 ISL title.

Oscar Bruzon — Profile

Bruzon stands out as the most successful coach in the history of the Bangladesh Premier League, having led Bashundhara Kings to five league titles along with six other trophies, including three Independence Cup and three Federation Cup titles. 9 His tenure with Bashundhara Kings was remarkable, as he guided the team to an impressive 94 wins in 114 matches. 9 Bruzon is well-acquainted with Indian football, having previously worked with clubs like Sporting Clube de Goa and Mumbai FC. His time at these two clubs was complemented by a stint as an assistant coach at Mumbai City FC during the 2015 ISL season.

The 22-Year Gap: Why It Took So Long

The gap between Bhowmick’s 2003-04 NFL title and Bruzon’s 2025-26 ISL triumph is the most striking element of this list. 4It has taken 22 years across the I-League and ISL eras, so this is a huge achievement.

Several factors explain the drought:

Manoranjan, who had guided East Bengal to the 2000-01 National Football League (NFL) title, said the wait was painful but worth it. “It feels sad that it took more than 20 years to win the league again, but the ultimate satisfaction is that we have finally done it.”
