The Announcement: Not a Movie, But a Ride

At Disney’s D23 Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase, the studio unveiled new footage from Avengers: Infinity Defense, an upcoming attraction opening at Avengers Campus in 2028. Hemsworth has recorded new in-ride cutscenes as Thor, joining Anthony Mackie’s Captain America and Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man as the only actors confirmed to have filmed fresh material so far. Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel also appears in the attraction’s marketing.

In the new footage, Hemsworth sports his Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War look — close-cropped hair, Mjolnir in hand — prepping park guests for a battle against Thanos alongside a lineup that includes Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye, Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, Letitia Wright’s Shuri, and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.

Why Timeline Continuity Doesn’t Quite Add Up

Worth noting: Avengers Campus attractions aren’t canon to the main MCU timeline. That’s evident here too — Thor appears in his pre-Endgame look, even though Mackie’s Captain America (a role he only inherits after Endgame) is standing right beside him. It’s a fun collision of eras built purely for the ride experience rather than strict continuity.

What This Means for Thor’s Actual MCU Future

The bigger question fans actually care about — will Hemsworth return to the mainline MCU after Secret Wars — remains unanswered. Thor is confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday, going head-to-head with Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, and is expected to appear in Secret Wars as well. But beyond that, his fate is murkier.

Hemsworth previously stirred retirement rumors after a reflective video about his “Legacy of Thor,” where he called the role “one of the greatest honors” of his life — language many fans read as a farewell signal. He’s also said in past interviews that his next appearance would likely need to “close the book” on the character, fueling speculation that Secret Wars could be his true send-off.

That said, Hemsworth has also hinted he’ll return “a couple more times” after the current Avengers films, which tempers the retirement fears somewhat. And as Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans have both shown, an MCU “death” doesn’t always mean a permanent exit — both are set to return in Avengers: Doomsday despite their Endgame farewells.

The Bigger Picture

For now, what’s certain is this: 2027’s Secret Wars won’t be the last time audiences see Hemsworth’s Thor in some form. Whether that translates into a Thor 5, another Avengers ensemble film, or simply more theme-park appearances remains to be seen. Given Thor: Love and Thunder‘s mixed reception, Marvel hasn’t rushed to greenlight a fifth solo outing, even though the film left the door open for a fatherhood-focused storyline for the character.
