Charlie Brooker’s ‘Blackmere’ Adds Rory Kinnear and More Ahead of 2027 Netflix Debut

Charlie Brooker is trading dystopian tech nightmares for a blood-soaked detective parody — and Blackmere, his newest Netflix project, just got a serious cast boost. Formerly known under the working title Project Codename, the series finally has a name, a growing ensemble, and a release window.

A Serious Crime Thriller That Isn’t Serious At All

Blackmere follows Detective John Blackmere as he leaves the fictional Northern city of Bleakford for London, chasing a ritualistic serial killer while avenging his partner’s death. But don’t expect a straight procedural — Netflix describes the show as an absurd comedy dressed up as an incredibly serious crime thriller, playing the genre’s grim tropes for laughs.

Brooker, best known for Black Mirror and Cunk on Earth, created and leads the writers’ room, joined by veteran comedy writers including Jason Hazeley and Joel Morris. Longtime collaborator Al Campbell directs.

New Faces Join the Ensemble

Alongside previously confirmed leads Paddy Considine, Georgina Campbell, and Lena Headey, Netflix has now confirmed Black Mirror and The Diplomat actor Rory Kinnear will appear, reportedly in the show’s very first episode. A wave of additional casting has also been revealed, including Abbie Murphy, Maximilian Osinski, and Nadia Albina, rounding out a deep supporting cast pulled from shows like Ted Lasso and Doctor Who.

Brooker’s TV career has spanned satire, horror, and sharp genre parody for over two decades — a full breakdown of his body of work is available on his Wikipedia page for anyone wanting the bigger picture.
