Charles Sobhraj: The Infamous “Bikini Killer” Returns to Headlines with Netflix’s Inspector Zende

The notorious serial killer Charles Sobhraj is back in the spotlight as Netflix’s latest crime thriller, “Inspector Zende,” premiered on September 5, 2025. The film stars Manoj Bajpayee as the Mumbai police officer who famously captured the “Bikini Killer” twice, bringing renewed attention to one of history’s most elusive criminals.

The Legend of the Bikini Killer

Charles Sobhraj was known as the Bikini Killer among the media and police due to the clothes his victims – usually tourists on vacation – were often found wearing. Called the “Bikini Killer” in Thailand, and also “The Serpent” for his ability to evade police and use various disguises, Sobhraj, now 78, is suspected of killing more than 20 Western backpackers on the “hippie trail” through Asia.

The reason behind this nickname is that most of his victims were foreign women who were seen in bikinis at vacation destinations. He would befriend his victims and cleverly drug them, murder them, and steal their belongings.

Netflix’s Inspector Zende: Bringing History to Life

Netflix released a new crime drama, Inspector Zende, on September 5, 2025. The film is inspired by the true story of Charles Sobhraj, referred to as Carl Bhojraj in the movie. The film stars Manoj Bajpayee as Inspector Madhukar Zende and Jim Sarbh as Carl Bhojraj, a character inspired by the infamous serial killer Charles Sobhraj.

The timing couldn’t be more perfect, as audiences remain fascinated by true crime stories, especially those involving such complex and manipulative criminals as Charles Sobhraj.

The Real Inspector Madhukar Zende

Madhukar Bapurao Zende was a fearless ACP in the Mumbai Police, known for hunting down dangerous criminals. His biggest achievement was capturing Charles Sobhraj twice. The Netflix film pays tribute to this dedicated officer who refused to let the cunning criminal escape justice.

Sobhraj’s Modus Operandi

Charles Sobhraj‘s criminal methodology was as sophisticated as it was deadly. He would:

• Target young Western backpackers on the Asian hippie trail
• Use charm and manipulation to gain victims’ trust
• Drug victims before robbing and killing them
• Assume victims’ identities using stolen passports
• Use multiple disguises to evade authorities across borders

Sobhraj’s first known victim, Teresa Knowlton from Seattle, was found drowned in the Gulf of Thailand wearing a floral bikini in 1975.

Current Status and Recent Developments

Though he freely admits to fleecing tourists, jewelry heists, and various druggings, Sobhraj now says he never killed anyone and has retracted previous confessions. Charles Sobhraj, now 80, was released from a Nepalese jail in 2022, and he roams in France as a free man.

This freedom has allowed him to continue capturing public attention, though he maintains his innocence regarding the murders that made him infamous.

Cultural Impact and Media Portrayals

Charles Sobhraj has been the subject of numerous books, documentaries, and films:

• The 2015 Hindi film Main Aur Charles, directed by Prawaal Raman, is reportedly based on Charles Sobhraj’s escape from Tihar Jail in New Delhi
