“I Want to Leave an Important Legacy”: Cesc Fabregas Speaks on Future Amid Bayer Leverkusen Links

Cesc Fabregas, the architect behind Como’s Serie A resurgence, finds himself at the center of transfer whispers once again. With Bayer Leverkusen targeting him as a potential successor to Xabi Alonso — who is poised to take over at Real Madrid — the Spaniard addressed growing speculation following Como’s impressive 3-1 victory over Cagliari. Calm yet passionate, Fabregas reflected on his journey, legacy, and the unique project he’s nurtured at Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia.

Crafting a Vision at Como

Since transitioning from player to manager at Como, Fabregas has steadily sculpted a side that once teetered on relegation into a mid-table unit with a clear identity. The club now sits tenth in the league, a position that reflects both strategic spending and tactical clarity.

Fabregas, speaking after the latest win, conveyed his appreciation for the platform Como provided: “I want to leave an important legacy, because whoever comes after me will find something good. I am very calm. If you are good today, do the same thing in the next match and lose, you are no longer good. But my message has never changed.”

This philosophy has underpinned Como’s transformation, as the former midfield maestro imbues the squad with a competitive ethos and tactical flexibility. His leadership has not only lifted morale but redefined expectations at the club.

Interest from Abroad and at Home

While Leverkusen’s interest draws headlines, Fabregas is also reportedly on the radar of Italian heavyweights including Roma, Milan, and Juventus. With Xabi Alonso preparing for a managerial jump to the Santiago Bernabéu, Leverkusen sees Fabregas as the ideal successor to continue their evolution in the Bundesliga.

Nevertheless, the Spaniard remains grounded, deflecting speculation and keeping the focus on the present: “Whatever happens I will thank this company, I am very proud of what we are seeing in Como.”

Emotional Ties and a Project in Progress

Leaving won’t be easy. Fabregas admits his bond with Como runs deep — forged during the final chapter of his playing days and strengthened through his rise as head coach.

“Obviously, there is an emotional aspect, I cannot deny that. Whatever happens, I will always be grateful to this club, proud of what is being built around Como. This energy at the Stadio Sinigaglia is different to when I arrived as a player.”

He emphasized his commitment to establishing a long-term legacy, one that outlives his own tenure: “I want to leave here leaving an inheritance, as the important thing is that whoever follows me will find a great club with lads who have a spectacular work ethic. I want to leave this to Como, then obviously I am very fond of everyone, very involved in their future too.”

Eyes on Europe? Staying Present in the Moment

Despite being quizzed on potential European qualification, Fabregas remained pragmatic. He recognizes football’s volatile nature and refuses to engage in empty promises.

“If I say yes or no, it will make no difference… If I win and then lose, everyone will say I am bad, I know it all. I am relaxed. You can be seen as good today, then if you do the same thing again, it is no longer the case.”

Such words reflect a coach focused on consistency rather than hype — a mindset that has served Como well so far.

No Goodbye Yet

Rumors aside, Fabregas insists he hasn’t made a decision yet. When asked if his recent statements resembled a farewell, he pushed back: “No, I have always said this. When I leave, I hope people say: ‘Wow.’ My work is to prepare everything, even after 5-10 years. The most difficult thing is what we’ve done so far, but now we must raise the bar.”

His commitment to long-term sustainability suggests he won’t depart lightly. Still, opportunities from top clubs may test his resolve in the coming months.
