The impending deal will make McHugh the fifth foreign signing for the Gaurs this season, joining the ranks of exceptional players like former Hyderabad FC defender Odei Onaindia, Carlos Martinez who is a Spanish forward, Victor Rodriguez who plays as a creative midfielder, and Australian midfielder Paulo Retre.

In the last season, McHugh played a pivotal role in Mohun Bagan’s triumphant ISL journey, making 21 appearances, and played a decisive role in the nail-biting final against Bengaluru FC, which resulted in a glorious victory on penalties. With three goals and one assist under his belt, he demonstrated why he’s considered one of the most experienced and reliable players in the league, featuring in a total of 66 matches across four seasons.

The decision to part ways was indeed a mutual one, with McHugh’s existing contract at Mohun Bagan and the club’s abundance of domestic players in his position making it an agreeable arrangement for both parties.

Meanwhile, the Mariners, in their pursuit of defensive solidity, are now on the lookout for a foreign defender to fill the void left by McHugh. As they continue to rely on a strong contingent of domestic midfielders, such as Glan Martins, Anirudh Thapa, Deepak Tangri, Lalrinliana Hnamte, and Sahal Abdul Samad, the team remains eager to fortify their defense.

In the ongoing transfer window, Mohun Bagan has already made waves by securing the services of Australian striker Jason Cummings and Albanian marksman Armando Sadiku, further adding to the anticipation and excitement surrounding the upcoming season.
