Border 2 Cast Assembles for First Group Picture; Fans Unsure About Varun Dhawan’s Fit Among Sunny Deol, Diljit Dosanjh

The excitement around Border 2 has just escalated as the makers finally unveiled the first official group picture of the ensemble cast. Featuring Sunny Deol, Diljit Dosanjh, Varun Dhawan, and Ahan Shetty, the photo has ignited discussions across social media platforms.

While many fans are thrilled to see their favorite stars gearing up for the war epic’s third shooting schedule in Pune, some netizens couldn’t help but point out that Varun Dhawan appeared slightly out of sync with the rugged energy of the rest of the group.

Third Schedule of Border 2 Kicks Off in Pune

On Tuesday, the film’s creators offered fans a glimpse into the ongoing shoot by dropping the first official group picture. The cast—Sunny Deol, Diljit Dosanjh, Varun Dhawan, and Ahan Shetty—posed alongside the production team. Sunny Deol took to Instagram to caption the moment with enthusiasm, writing, “When all ‘Forces’ Come together! #BORDER2… Diljit Dosanjh & Ahan Shetty join Sunny Deol and Varun Dhawan as the battalion kicks off the 3rd schedule at Pune’s National Defence Academy.”

This marks the first time that all the major actors from the much-anticipated sequel have been seen together, fueling anticipation for what’s being touted as one of 2026’s biggest cinematic releases.

Diljit, Ahan Bring Fresh Energy to the Set

The addition of Diljit Dosanjh and Ahan Shetty to the shoot has already received a warm welcome from fans. Diljit, known for his magnetic screen presence, effortlessly exuded charm in the group photo. Ahan Shetty, following in his father Suniel Shetty’s footsteps, looked ready for his big-screen moment in this patriotic drama. His sister Athiya Shetty also expressed her excitement, reposting the picture with a caption that read, “Can’t wait for this one.”

Comments flooded social media, with fans expressing their eagerness—“Eagerly waiting,” wrote one enthusiastic follower.

Internet Divided Over Varun Dhawan’s Inclusion

Despite the general enthusiasm, not everyone was on board with the casting choices. A section of social media users felt Varun Dhawan didn’t quite align with the rugged military aesthetic of the rest of the ensemble. Criticisms surfaced with comments like, “Varun ki jagha pe Vicky Kaushal and Sidharth Malhotra ko cast karna thaa (The makers should have roped in Vicky Kaushal or Sidharth Malhotra instead of Varun),” while another bluntly asked, “What is Varun Dhawan doing in this film?”

However, others were quick to defend Varun’s inclusion, pointing out that he has delivered intense performances before, and his moustached avatar for Border 2 might just surprise everyone when the film hits screens.

Legacy of Border and What to Expect from the Sequel

Directed by Anurag Singh, known for helming Kesari with Akshay Kumar, Border 2 is expected to uphold the legacy of JP Dutta’s iconic Border (1997). The original film, set during the India-Pakistan War of 1971, is widely remembered for its stirring patriotism and memorable characters.

Sunny Deol is set to reprise a leading role, anchoring the story much like he did in the original. The prequel starred Jackie Shroff and Akshaye Khanna alongside Sunny, with Suniel Shetty playing the unforgettable BSF Assistant Commandant Bhairon Singh. In a poetic twist, Suniel’s son Ahan now joins the sequel, continuing the family’s association with the franchise.

Produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, JP Dutta, and Nidhi Dutta, Border 2 is slated for release on January 23, 2026, right before Republic Day—ensuring its patriotic fervor connects with the audience on a deeper level.
