Dhoni less India falters against Australia, defeated India by 35 runs, clinch series 3-2

MS Dhoni’s resting for the final two matches provided opportunities for others in India’s middle order, but they were far from taken.

Teams:

India:

  • Rohit Sharma
  • Shikhar Dhawan
  • Virat Kohli(c)
  • Rishabh Pant(wk)
  • Kedar Jadhav
  • Vijay Shankar
  • Ravindra Jadeja
  • Bhuvneshwar Kumar
  • Kuldeep Yadav
  • Mohammed Shami
  • Jasprit Bumrah

Australia:-

  • Usmn Khawaja
  • Aaron Finch(c)
  • Peter Handscomb
  • Marcus Stoinis
  • Glenn Maxwell
  • Aston Turner
  • Alex Carey(wk)
  • Jhye Richardson
  • Pat Cummins
  • Nathan Lyon
  • Adam Zampa

Australia won the five match odi series 3-2. Australia bowled out India for 237 runs, won by 35 runs.

Australia won the toss and choose to bat. They started well. In form Usman Khawaja scored his second century of the series to help Australia past 272/9.

India’s chase, and defeat from 2-0 up for the first time in history, opened more than a few questions for Kohli and the coach Ravi Shastri, not least team balance after only three specialist batsmen were selected. With Shikhar Dhawan and Kohli dismissed cheaply, Rohit Sharma seemed weighed down by the task before him, twice offering chances spurned off Zampa’s bowling before charging wildly to be well stumped by Alex Carey.

A decade ago Australia won an ODI series in India despite a surfeit of injuries. Numerous stronger sides have left empty handed since then, so it was with a great deal of satisfaction that Aaron Finch’s team sealed this victory from 0-2 down, the first time an Australian side had ever done so in 50-over matches, with a disciplined, determined and tactically astute defence of 272 in Delhi.

Being 0-2 down is something the Australians have become used to in more than one sense over the past year, missing the names of David Warner and Steven Smith from their team sheet as a result of the Newlands scandal.

India had not lost any ODI series at home since going down 3-2 to South Africa in October 2015. That result arrived only a matter of months after Australia won the previous World Cup so was not considered a major reverse. However this defeat, on the cusp of the IPL, has left India with precious little time to iron out an increasing number of wrinkles. By contrast the Australians can now look forward to a further five matches against Pakistan.

Cristiano Ronaldo produced another gem of a performance to steer Juventus into the UEFA Champions League quarter-final

Cristiano Ronaldo has scored his record-equalling 8th hat-trick in UEFA Champions League to turn the 2-0 1st leg deficit and win the tie by an aggregate score of 3-2 against Atletico Madrid.

Cristiano Ronaldo has led Juventus to a memorable Champions League comeback. Atletico Madrid has never lost a tie after going 2-0 up in the 1st leg and they have also not lost against any Italian side. But Cristiano Ronaldo made everything possible with his record equalling 8th hat-trick in the UEFA Champions League.

The VAR denied Juventus an early 4 minute lead. But in the 27th minute, Jon Oblak couldn’t save that powerful header from Cristiano Ronaldo. That goal gave hope to the whole of Turin and their was no looking back after that.

Then few minutes into the second half Ronaldo headed another powerful header into the Atletico Madrid’s net from Joao Cancelo’s cross. This time Oblak got a hand, but it was too late. The referee awarded that as a goal by the virtue of the goal line technology.

Another player who stood out for Juventus in the match other than Ronaldo was Federico Bernardeschi. Federico Bernardeschi’s inswinging cross from the left wing found Ronaldo towering above Juanfran for the opener. And when Bernardeschi’s solo run was illegally halted by substitute Angel Correa, Ronaldo completed his record-equalling 8th Champions League hat-trick from the penalty spot to down Atletico Madrid yet again.

Cristiano Ronaldo told Sky Sports Italia after knocking Atletico Madrid out for the fifth time: “This is why Juve brought me in, to help on magic nights like this. Atleti are a really tough team to face, but we are strong too and proved we deserved to go through. It’s too early to talk about the final, let’s take it one step at a time.
It had to be a special night and it was. Not just for the goals, but for the team and their incredible attitude. This is the mentality you need in the Champions League and we are on the right track.”

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone got too excited after his side’s 1st leg 2-0 win and went a long way with his celebration. The Argentine tactician escaped a touchline ban for his controversial ‘cojones’ celebration, but Uefa did hit him with a €20,000 fine and forced him to apologise.
But in the 2nd leg Simeone got the harshest punishment. Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick and celebrated his winning goal in the same style.

The Argentina legend Maradona is also amazed by Ronaldo’s remarkable feat. “There are players who have been touched by a magic wand,” he said, as quoted by Marca. “The truth is we Argentines are proud that Messi is Argentinian and that he didn’t go off with the Spanish [at international level]. The other one is an animal. Ronaldo is pure power, and now he’s also a wizard. He said he’d score three goals and he scored three goals.”

Atletico Madrid – losing finalists in 2014 and 2016 to Cristiano Ronaldo’s Real Madrid – struggled throughout and Griezmann lamented the side’s performance away from home. “We didn’t play the game we wanted to, it was a bad night and we made it easier for Juventus.” Griezmann told Sky Sport Italia. “We are all disappointed, as we just didn’t play. I’m the first to say I didn’t do enough, our tempo was wrong and Juventus were superior on every level.
Considering we won the first leg 2-0, we can’t say much. I don’t know what happened, it reminded me a little of the Bayern Munich game, but that time we were able to make some adjustments. Tonight, Juve were superior on all levels.
Ronaldo is a great player: he had three chances and scored three goals.”

Atletico Madrid captain Diego Godin added: “We weren’t able to find ways to attack them. They were able to score and we couldn’t score the goal that we needed to qualify. We will continue giving it our all until the end of the season.”

Matuidi hailed his team-mate after Juve’s incredible victory in Turin, where Ronaldo’s 86th-minute penalty sealed the win. “It was an extraordinary night for everyone – a special night from the first minute,” he said, via the club’s website. “We are very happy, and now we are moving ahead with our work. We want to continue to grow in order to progress further in the Champions League. We have a strong team, and Cristiano is the best player in the world.”

Bonucci said to Sky Sport Italia: “This is a great night for the Juventus fans. Many things were said, both after that game [the first leg] and over the last few days, but Juve always respond on the pitch. We had four chances and put three of them in. They did the same in the first leg, having two chances and scoring both. We put our cojones into this match. Atleti were missing players, but so were we, and Leonardo Spinazzola put in a great performance in an incredible atmosphere.
Everything that was said hit us on a human level and that brought more out of us. Our tactical approach was to push down the flanks with Spinazzola and [Joao] Cancelo, keeping their full-backs deep. We have a great coach who is leading us into the quarter-finals. We know this is football, people can’t wait for you to make a mistake, but the coach and team are big enough to shrug that off. It wasn’t easy, but we completed the comeback. It’s a boost of adrenaline that will push us on to [final date] June 1.”

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri has also hailed Cristiano Ronaldo. He told in the news conference: “It’s impossible to think Cristiano with only one goal scored in this Champions League. He scored because he played well in the box and his team-mates worked well in the gameplay. A great match with an outstanding crowd supporting us and the players gave all Italian football fans a real show. That’s the most important thing.”

Real Madrid have reappointed Zinedine Zidane as their head coach and have already made their first move for Hazard

Zinedine Zidane took over the club for the second time after leaving the club 10 months ago. He now intends to bring back Real Madrid to where it belongs.

The Real Madrid board have re-appointed Zinedine Zidane as the head coach, after Solari failed to make an impact at the Bernabeu. Solari’s team lost back to back Clasicos against Barcelona, which cost them both the Copa del Rey and the LaLiga. And then a humiliating 4-1 defeat to a young Ajax side have also ended their UEFA Champions League campaign.

Florentino Perez revealed that he approached Zidane five days ago. He was delighted that Zidane accepted the challenge of leading a new era. Zidane has been offered a three year deal on Tuesday and he would manage his first game against Celta Vigo at the Bernabeu on Saturday. He is now eager to get back to work with the Real Madrid squad.

Zidane

Zidane said at the presentation: “It’s a special day for everyone. I’m very happy to come back home. I don’t have anything to say – I’m very happy to be back and I want to work to put this club back where it should be. I left because a change was needed at the end of last season, for the good of everyone, as they had won so much. I returned as the president called me, and I love him, and this club.
After eight months, I was eager to return to coaching. At the end of [last] season, I made the decision for the good of everyone. It’s a great responsibility. All the players here love this club a lot, and I am one more, I played with this badge, I won a lot of things.”

Zidane is also under no illusions of the task at hand. He accepted that there were disappointments in his final season in charge when they failed to defend their league title or win the Copa del Rey. “I don’t forget what we won, but neither do I forget the bad things,” he said. “We lost LaLiga quickly, also the Copa del Rey. We won the Champions League, okay, but I know where I am. I’m going to give everything so that this team becomes better.”

The appointment of Zidane has made sure some things. Let’s take a look at them:

Hazard

Real Madrid have already made their first move for Hazard
The new Real Madrid manager has reportedly made contact with Chelsea for the signing of Hazard, who is currently rated at around £100 million. Zidane acknowledges that the current Madrid team is short on quality and wants to bring in the Belgian during the summer. Hazard has in the past revealed his admiration for Zidane and is on record to have said that Real Madrid is his dream club. The 28-year-old is also yet to sign a contract extension at Chelsea, with his current deal set to expire in the summer of 2020. Though Chelsea want to keep the 28-year-old at Stamford Bridge, but the chance to play under boyhood idol Zinedine Zidane and having one-year left on his contract could prove decisive.

Meanwhile, the reports also suggest that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is hoping that Zidane’s appointment could help lure PSG duo Neymar and Kylian Mbappe to join the Los Blancos.

Marcelo and Isco

The reinstatement of Marcelo and Isco in the starting XI
It’s hard for a player like Marcelo to be axed from the starting XI after he has won four LaLiga, Champions League and Club World Cup titles, three Supercopas de Espana and UEFA Super Cups and a pair of Copas del Rey. He has lost his place to Sergio Reguilon under Solari.
Marcelo has started just five LaLiga matches under Solari and is a reported target for Juventus in the close-season. The Bianconeri is keen to add a familiar face for Ronaldo to avoid the Portugal captain’s move to Turin falling flat.

Like Marcelo, Isco has also been axed from the Real Madrid starting XI. He looked set to play an important role for Julen Lopetegui but his acute appendicitis brought a halt to his strong start to the season. And felt down the ranks under Solari.
However, the attacking midfielder played some of his best football for Real Madrid under Zidane, a fact evidenced by the five-year contract he was handed in September 2017. That deal was understood to have included a staggering €700m release clause, underlining the regard he was held in by Zidane and the club just 18 months ago.

Now, both Marcelo and Isco will hope to have a chance to prove their worth at Real Madrid.

Bale

The possible transfer of Gareth Bale
Zidane and Bale don’t have a very good relationship. It was evident at the time of Zidane’s last spell as the Real Madrid manager. There were also some reports suggesting that Zidane left the club because the Real Madrid board backtracked on their commitment of selling Bale, after he played a pivotal role in the triumph in Kiev. HIs tremendous overhead-kick goal helped the Los Blancos beat Liverpool to claim a third straight Champions League title.
However, Bale’s failure to replace Cristiano Ronaldo as the leading man in Real Madrid combined with the return of Zidane suggests the club may have had another change of heart. And with Vinicius Junior proving he is capable of making an impact in the first team while the Welshman spent the start of 2019 on the sidelines with another calf injury, his time may now be up at Real Madrid.

Steve Smith, David Warner should be more than 100% ready for World Cup in England: Ricky Ponting

Steve Smith and David Warner are expected to make their return to the Australian squad at the 2019 World Cup.

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting said that Steve Smith and David Warner should be ready for the “absolute worst” when the team travel to England for the World Cup. The pair are expected to make a return to the national squad in the mega event having missed the cut in the preceding series against Pakistan due their elbow surgeries.’

Smith and Warner have been serving one year bans that was imposed on them by Cricket Australia for their roles in the 2018 ball tampering scandal in Newlands, South Africa. They are both going to the UAE as part of their reintegration although they won’t be part of the squad that face Pakistan. “I don’t think it is much of a challenge internally around the players,” said Ponting, who will be assistant coach to Justin Langer at the World Cup.

Australian batsmen Steve Smith and David Warner will come back stronger than ever from their 12-month bans and the latter will be the best player at the World Cup this year, former leg spinner Shane Warne has said.

Their bans end on March 28 and both players will be reintegrated into the national team.

“I think what you are going to see is a pretty quiet David Warner and Steve Smith. They are just going to try and let their bat do the talking and toe the line,” Warne told The Telegraph in an interview.

Cricket Australia have given Steve Smith and David Warner the go ahead to play in IPL 2019 for their respective franchises Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad respectively.

The World Cup starts on May 30 with hosts England taking on South Africa in the first match. Australia’s first match will be on June 1 against Afghanistan.

East Bengal’s head coach Alejandro Menendez believes they deserved the title

The Spanish coach believes that the Red and Gold brigade should have won their first ever I-League title.

East Bengal failed to win the I-League once again this season as they fell a point short of champions Chennai City FC on the final day.

The wait for the I-League trophy for the Kolkata outfit continued as they are yet to win the competition. They were at the second place in four seasons( 2010-11, 2011-12, 2013-14) and at the third place in three seasons(2012-13, 2015-16, 2016-17), but never won a title.

“I think when you lose a title, it is not because you lost one game. I now want to keep all of the positives. There is not a special reason. We had one team that wanted one more point than us. The team who got more points won the title,” said Alejandro Menendez.

For the third time in as many years, the I-League title race will be decided on the final match day and the two teams in the fray for the title today are Chennai City FC and East Bengal.

East Bengal comes from behind to defeat Gokulam Kerala 2-1 in Kozhikode in their last match but it isn’t enough to secure a maiden I-League title. Chennai City has defeated Minerva Punjab by 3-1 in their final match and the title goes South this season.

Alejandro Menendez’s men have to beat Gokulam Kerala FC and hope that Chennai City drops points against Minerva Punjab, then only they would be able to win the title.

If the points of East Bengal and Chennai City were same then also Chennai City would have won because of the number of goals they have scored and they have received.

Zinedine Zidane is set to return as the Real Madrid head coach

The Frenchman is reported to be re-appointed as the head coach of Real Madrid, according to widespread reports in Spain.

Zinedine Zidane had created history as the Real Madrid coach. He has won three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles, which no coach has ever done before. He was also a fan favourite during his time at Real Madrid, both as a coach and a player. Zidane will return to the club just 10 months after leaving Los Blancos.

According to sources, the Real Madrid board of directors will meet today at around 1700 GMT and sack Santiago Solari after a series of disappointing results which has left them with a season nothing to play for. They will re-appoint Zinedine Zidane. But his length of contract has not yet been confirmed.

Zidane

Zidane, who spent five years at the club during the ‘Galacticos’ era during which he won a European crown in 2002, will become the third manager this season for Real Madrid after the dismissal of Julen Lopetegui and then Solari, who was in charge for a mere 5 months.

Zidane was first appointed as the Real Madrid coach in January 2016, after a spell in charge of the B team and he was an instant hit at the Bernabeu.

Zidane had stepped down last May after winning a third consecutive Champions League with the club he represented for five years as a player. He said: “I am doing this for the good of this team, for this club. It would have been difficult for me to win again next year. There have been good moments, but also difficult times. I do not forget that. And at this club, you must know this. I do not want to start a season and have a bad time. I want to end with Real Madrid when everything is going well. I did it as a player, and now again as a coach. This [is] the right moment to end things well.”

Zidane

Solari has reportedly said his goodbyes to the staff at Madrid’s Valdebebas training ground and have been relieved of his duties following a torrid run of results. Zidane has been convinced to return by president Florentino Perez despite receiving offers from elsewhere, with Juventus said to be among his suitors.

According to Spanish media outlet Marca, Zidane is once again expected to be reappointed as the head coach of Real Madrid and to take his first training session on Tuesday before managing his first game against Celta Vigo at the Bernabeu on Saturday.

Sergio Ramos has posted his personal Q&A on Instagram

The Real Madrid captain has posted his personal Q&A on Instagram to show that he is not hiding from the spotlight at the time of crisis at Real Madrid.

Real Madrid have been knocked out of all competitions within a week. Back to back Clasico defeats against Barcelona have cost them both the Copa del Rey and the LaLiga. And then a humiliating 4-1 defeat to a young Ajax side have also ended their UEFA Champions League campaign.

It was reported after the loses that Ramos had a dressing room argument with the Real Madrid president Florentino Perez. Ramos was also blamed for taking a deliberate yellow card against Ajax in the dying moments of the 1st leg. UEFA then decided to ban him for an extra game after he suggested in a television interview that he was booked deliberately to avoid a possible quarter-final ban.

Sergio Ramos

After all these speculations, Sergio Ramos has come to the front and has given the answers to all the questions that have been raised and have also supported under-fire coach Santiago Solari. He has posted on Instagram an interview of his personal Q&A.

Sergio Ramos wrote: “As footballers we like to do our talking on the pitch but this season is not turning out that way. Recent events have been disastrous and I’m not hiding. We are not hiding. We the players are primarily responsible and I, as captain, more than anyone. That’s why I thought that the most honest way to answer the questions that are circulating around us would be to tackle them directly.”

Then in his interview, he continued: “Was the yellow card in Amsterdam an error?
Absolutely it was an error and I take the blame 200 per cent.

Why did you record the documentary [while banned for the Ajax match]?
There are certain commitments made and it never remotely went through my head that the game could have turned out as it did. The recording itself was scaled down as the game went on.

Sergio Ramos with Perez

Did you argue with the president in the dressing room?
Dressing room issues are discussed and resolved in the dressing room. There’s no problem whatsoever and everybody has the same interest: Real Madrid.

“Did you address your team-mates and criticise them? We always talk and motivate each other in the dressing room and always in a constructive way.

“Did you have a confrontation with Marcelo?
We have exchanges in every training session. It’s part of working with pressure. But it’s just an anecdote like so many others that happen from day to day. Marce is like a brother to me.

“Why did you travel to Valladolid? Because I wanted to be close and support my team-mates.

“What’s happening with the coach?
It’s a decision that’s not ours to make and in which we never interfere. We have enormous respect for the position and we always support the Real Madrid coach.

Sergio Ramos

“These reflections are, without doubt, the result of a deeply disappointing season but if success didn’t stop us, we’re not going to let defeat stop us. It’s our obligation to carry on, to work and to evolve. And to remember that some of us are lucky enough to play for Real Madrid, some of us are lucky enough to form part of its history, but Real Madrid was, is and will always be Real Madrid. No one name makes the legend of Real Madrid, but we have all written that legend together.
Together we have to work for the future and restore our hope.”
