SMIC moving forward with its 7nm chipset production

0

The Trade restrictions put on Chinese companies by the US administration have affected China’s semiconductor market the most. It’s house manufacturing plants have suffered tremendously due to their access to American technologies being cut off by the US administration. But the companies such as Huawei and SMIC soon learned to develop new technologies and innovations to become more self-dependent.

Recently the Shanghai-based Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) stated that it had started small-scale trial production of its second-generation N+1 FinFET process. The announcement came at a time when its investors were questioning the company’s progress in the R&D and production of 7-nanometer products.

According to sources, SMIC first achieved mass production of the most advanced 14nm process in China in 2019. It is the company’s first-generation FinFET process, and it had deployed the process to manufacture the Hisilicon Kirin 710A chipset, which was utilized first on the Honor Play 4T and then a couple of other Huawei products.

This year, however, things were different as the company was facing various restrictions from the US administration, that its investors were getting anxious about the company’s progress. To this, the company responded that its second-generation FinFET N+1 process has indeed entered the customer introduction stage. It also hinted that it is expected to start small-scale production (trial production) by the end of 2020.

Earlier, INNOSILICON also announced that it had completed the world’s first chip tape-out and testing based on SMIC’s FinFET N+1 advanced process. All IPs are made in-house, with one-time functions. According to sources, the N+1 process is very similar to the 7nm process in terms of power and stability and does not require EUV lithography. Compared to the 14nm process, SMIC’s N+1 process can increase the performance by 20% and offers a 57% reduction in power consumption. And the company claims that the 7nm market benchmark performance also increases by 35%.

AMD might not include SAM support for its Ryzen 3000 and older models

0

Advanced Micro Devices is one of the leading manufacturers of CPUs and GPUs. It is the leading rival of not only Nvidia but of Intel. The company has provided many outstanding cards in the silicon market and has now established its dominion. One of the first things which the company introduced was its support for the Resizable BAR (AKA Smart Access Memory) feature on the new Ryzen 5000 desktop CPUs and RX 6000 GPUs. But now, the company has announced that it might never offer backward compatibility with its older Zen models like Ryzen 3000, 2000, and 1000.

According to sources, the Resizable BAR feature is actually part of the PCIe gen 3 specs and is supported by all motherboards and CPUs that are compatible with the PCIe 3.x features. But AMD has other plans for its Zen-based CPUs. But AMD’s rival Intel’s CPUs all the way back to 2014 are eligible for a Resizable BAR BIOS update.

Zen2 CPUs use the same IO die and PCIe controller as Zen3, but AMD SAM in Zen3 models are actually controlled through a new ISA CPU instruction set. The instructions are only emulated in microcode using other similar instructions in the Zen2 and older cores. Thus everything predating the new Ryzen 5000 becomes too slow to benefit from the performance uplift offered by AMD SAM.

AMD’s Frank Azor stated regarding the AMD SAM compatibility with previous CPUs that “look into it and see if it is going to be possible to do it with any performance uplift and any reliability, and please stay tuned.” It is interesting that the company is offering its AMD SAM feature at this stage of the company. It makes one expect that the company will surely offer some more features in the coming future.

Third-party UPI services may be chargeable from 1st January: Report

0

This year, 2020, will be remembered in the long run due to the outbreak of coronavirus. In this time period, our lifestyle changes a lot, along with regular habits. The mode of transaction is one of them. Though the initiative to promote online transactions was taken far before; massive online shopping, contactless movements, and social distancing boost the process.

Other than net banking or other methods, in India, the consumers mainly prefer UPI transaction as it’s easy, fast, and obviously secure. On top of that, third parties UPI service providers are providing so many cashback and rewards to attract users.

Till now, all the transactions are completely free. If you are one of the users and have a habit of making lots of transactions regularly, you may have to change that. According to a video report by Cobrapost, the National Payments Corporation of India or NPCI, in short, decided to apply a 30% market cap on the third-party UPI service providers. In the list, Google Pay, Phone Pay, and Amazon Pay are the well-knowns, though there are plenty more. If you are looking for Paytm in the list, let you know, as Paytm holds the license of Payments Bank, it doesn’t come under third party service provider category.

Third-party UPI Services may chargeable from 1st January, Report_TechnoSports.co.in

Coming to the impact users can face. According to the report, the platforms may charge some amount from the users against transactions. Now, it may be possible there will be some conditions for it. Currently, there is no particular information.

The reason described by NPCI is to restrict any monopoly of those platforms in the coming days and also to restrict on huge cash backs or rewards. It’s predicted that, as an impact, the usage of Paytm and the other apps with Payment Bank license will increase a bit.

You can check the Cobrapost video (in Hindi) here.

AMD’s announces its projected earnings for the years beyond 2023

0

The current year has seen ways of changes this year. The semiconductor market has been developing the latest technology to offer high-performance devices in the market. We already about Advanced Micro Devices that the company acquired its rival Xilinx earlier this year. AMD is known for its processors and graphics units.

But by acquiring Xilinx, it is hoping to expand its silicon footprint. Analysts claim that the deal will allow the company to target the growing artificial intelligence, data centre, and 5G segments.

At the company’s Form S4, it announced a new Projection for its products. The projections provide estimates for the company’s internal revenue growth rate for the years beyond the fiscal year 2023. The projection is actually a big deal because it allows for the comparison of the company’s growth expectations. The data might evolve and gives us a milestone that AMD has set for itself.

AMD claimed that it predicts a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20% for the next five years. AMD’s revenues for the years, assuming a flat 20% year-over-year growth, turn out as:

Revenue ($ Millions)2019 (Actual)202020212022202320242025
Analyst Day CAGR of 20% applied evenly:6,7318,68310,42012,50415,005
Form S4 Filed on Friday, December 4 2020:6,7319,31911,50014,00017,00019,55022,000
Growth rate implied by S4:38%23%22%21%15%13%

For the first nine months of 2020, AMD’s revenue stands at $6,519 million. The results show that the company has nearly met last year’s figure with a full quarter to spare. But it also marked 31% year-over-year growth for the quarter. Now as to whether the company will be able to meet the milestone remains to be seen.

Microsoft Surface Pro 8 and Surface Laptop 4 spotted on Geekbench

0

Yesterday we already saw the appearance of an unnamed Surface laptop on Geekbench score. The device rumoured to be Surface Laptop 4 is believed to be powered by AMD’s new Renoir APUs. In other news, Microsoft will also be releasing a new Microsoft Surface Pro 8, which will be powered by an Intel Tiger Lake chipset.

Now another Geekbench score of both the Surface Pro 8 and Surface Laptop 4 has appeared on the scorecard. According to sources, the Surface device is powered by an AMD Ryzen 7 3780U Microsoft Surface Edition (MSE) APU. The Ryzen 7 3780U MSE is actually a Zen+ 4C/8T part and has a base clock of 2.3 GHz and a boost of up to 4 GHz. The entry on Geekbench shows that the device has an 8C/16T part, and it also has a codename as Renoir.

Microsoft will launch Surface Pro X 2020 with a custom SQ2 processor in October

The benchmark results achieved by the APU stands to confirm that the card is indeed Renoir. The original Ryzen 7 3780U MSE manages 940 points in single-core and 3,050 points in multi-core Geekbench 5 tests. But according to reports, the new Ryzen MSE APU scored 1,034 and 6,211 points in single and multi-core tests, respectively.

The original Ryzen 7 3780U MSE came with Vega 11 iGPU, whereas the new Ryzen MSE APU comes with a Vega 8 iGPU. It has a maximum boost of 1.95 GHz. One Geekbench OpenCL computes test the Vega 8 achieved the score of 14,075 points in the Geekbench OpenCL compute test.

The Surface 8 Pro, on the other hand, is powered by the Core i7-1185G7 and its benchmark scores are also interesting. It managed to post a score of 1,343 and 4,970 in single and multi-core tests, respectively. The previous generation of the Surface Pro devices was powered by Intel’s Ice Lake SKUs, and the new Surface Pro 8 models will have the new Tiger Lake CPUs to boot. Though there are no other major significant changes that Microsoft has offered with the Surface Pro 8 and the updated CPU will only provide a bare minimum performance boost.

Samsung will launch three foldable smartphones in 2021-UBI confirms

0

The OLED research from UBI Researches confirms that the South Korean Tech Giant, Samsung is going to launch three foldable smartphones in 2021. The OLED Research firm also reveals that Samsung was preparing three types of foldable OLED panels, which gives us a clear indication that the company is going to launch three foldable devices, include- Galaxy Z Fold 3, Z Fold Lite, and Z Flip 2.

According to the source, all these three foldable devices will use next-generation ultra-thin glass as the cover window. The upcoming foldable devices also feature LTPO (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) technology and thin-film transistors (TFT) due to the reduction in power consumption.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 will sport a 7-inches primary display and a 4-inches secondary display whereas the predecessor Galaxy Z Fold 2 has a bigger secondary display of 6.2-inches. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 will feature an under-display selfie camera. The Galaxy Z Fold Lite will be the budget model of the Galaxy Z Fold 3. The Galaxy Z Fold Lite will also have the same display size as the Galaxy Z Fold 3.

According to the source, Samsung was researching ultra-thin glasses with a thickness of 60 or 100 micrometers. That is thicker than the glasses that are used in the previous foldable devices this year, which had a thickness of 30 micrometers, which allows for the glass to be more flexible but cannot handle the pressure from a pen point without leaving a mark. 60 micrometers or thicker glasses can able to handle the pressure but is less flexible.

The Galaxy Z Fold Lite may not offer the under-display selfie camera and may be equipped with the cheaper internal for the lower price point. The source also reveals that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will have an S Pen support.

It seems that the investors tied up in the last quarter of 2019 by American Cricket Enterprise, the owners of MCL. It also seems that all three of the investors have invested their individual stakes at the MLC entity level and currently do not hold allegiances or interests in any of the city-based franchises.

Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella’s love and passion for cricket is not a secret anymore. He represented his alma mater Hyderabad Public School in the much competitive Hyderabad Schools cricket and have won many trophies and medals too. From the sources, it is also known that Shahrukh Khan will go for Los Angeles while Nadella has to settle for Seattle. Nadella and his wife also own a stake in the Seattle based MLS soccer club Seattle Sounders FC.

It is also learnt from the sources that the Dallas-based real estate tycoon and billionaire Ross Perot Jr. and his partner Anurag Jain have invested in the Dallas franchise of the said league. Perot Jr is also a minority stakeholder in the NBA team Dallas Mavericks.

From the sources, it is also found that PayTM founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma, 42-year-old CEO of the fin-tech company who recently collaborated with BCCI as PayTM extended its contract with cricket board to remain the title sponsor for all domestic and international cricket in India until 2023, is also in the list of high profile investors in MCL.

The new league is operated by ACE, founded by Vineet Jain, Satyan Gajwani of Times Group and Vijay Srinivasan and Sameer Mehta of Willow TV.

USA cricket is also in the process of co-bidding for a major Global ICC event in 2023-2031 cycle with West Indies Cricket.
