Barcelona 0-3 Juventus

Cristiano Ronaldo managed to score his first two goals against Barcelona in the Champions League as he led the Italian Champions to a victory in Camp Nou. The 3-0 defeat is Barcelona’s first defeat at home in the group stage in over a decade. The last occasion being a 2-0 defeat against Ruben Kazan in 2009.

Weston McKennie managed to convert a beautifully chipped in ball by Juan Cuadrado with an equally mind-blowing finish. Barcelona had plenty of chances to nick one back for themselves but did not manage to beat a resolute Gigi Buffon between the sticks.

RB Leipzig 3-2 Manchester United

The German outfit managed to extract the perfect revenge for the humiliation of the reverse fixture by sending United back to the Europa League. Early goals from Angelino and Amadou Haidara made the comeback very tough for the Red Devils from 11 minutes onwards.

As the scoreline suggests, they didn’t manage to score enough to salvage even a point. Substitute Justin Kluivert scored 13 minutes after coming on to give his team a 3 goal cushion. United managed to snatch two back after another Bruno Fernandes penalty was converted, and an own goal from Leipzig two minutes afterwards. However, it was not enough to keep their Champions League hopes alive.

Real Madrid 2-0 Borussia Monchengladbach

Los Blancos managed to qualify for the knockout stages by beating the Foals, who also managed to make it to the last 16 despite losing the game. A first-half brace from Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema was enough to push the team to the top of the table and qualify for the knockout stages as group winners.

On the other hand, Inter Milan’s draw with Shakhtar saw them drop out of Europe completely as they finished last in their group. The Ukrainians, on the other hand, will be competing in the knockout stages of the Europa League next.

Best Player: Angelino (RB Leipzig)

The Manchester City loanee managed to dispatch the Reds out of the top tier of Europe and back into the Europa League almost single-handedly. He was absolutely on fire throughout the night, and got the better of Manchester United’s defense on many occasions.

Sony buys Anime Streaming Service Crunchyroll from AT&T for $1.18 Billion

American multinational conglomerate holding company AT&T Inc. is selling its anime video unit Crunchyroll for $1.18 billion to Sony. Crunchyroll will become a part of Sony Corp.’s Funimation Global Group. The deal is reportedly a part of a drive by the telecom giant to unload assets and pay the debt down. The cash transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and AT&T hopes to complete the deal as soon as possible but didn’t confirm the time frame. 

The sale of Crunchyroll is part of the rebuilding process of WarnerMedia, a business AT&T acquired in 2018 in its $85 billion purchase of Time Warner. Sony and AT&T were in talks for months about the deal as reported earlier by Bloomberg. AT&T made a more than $1 billion purchase when they acquired Crunchyroll back in 2018. 

Crunchyroll was founded back in 2006, it is a premier anime direct-to-consumer service with more than 3 million Subscription Video On Demand (SVOD) subscribers and growing. It serves 90 million registered users across more than 200 countries through other media and products, including mobile games and merchandise. Crunchyroll employs about 550 people, with 250 in the U.S., mostly residing in San Francisco and Los Angeles, and about 200 in Europe.

After the purchase, Sony aims to broaden distribution for Crunchyroll’s content partners and wants to work on creating new offerings for anime fans.

“We have a deep understanding of this global art form and are well-positioned to deliver outstanding content to audiences around the world,” Tony Vinciquerra, chairman and chief executive officer of Sony Pictures Entertainment, said in the statement according to Bloomberg. “Together with Crunchyroll, we will create the best possible experience for fans and greater opportunity for creators, producers, and publishers in Japan and elsewhere.”

Atsushi Osanai, a professor at Waseda Business School has opined that the deal also makes it easier for Sony to promote its music rather than just anime as the theme music of the cartoons is often created by the company’s artists.

Under WarnerMedia chief Jason Kilar, AT&T’s media operations are focusing on HBO Max as the company shocked Hollywood last week after they announced to put all of Warner Bros.’s major movies next year on HBO Max at the same time they hit theaters. AT&T hopes the $15-a-month streaming service that launched in May will compete against the big boys that are Netflix Inc. and Walt Disney Co.’s Disney+.

Advanced Micro Devices has been in the news around the year, and with the launch of its latest graphics cards. The company has yet again made the headlines. Delivering on its promise, the company has finally launched. It’s AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT GPUs for US$999. The graphics card comes with 16 GB VRAM and has a board power of 300 W.

When we compare the card with NVIDIA’s latest GeForce RTX 3090, we find that the green team is offering its module at US$1,499 with 24 GB VRAM and 350 W TDP. It is also offering an affordable version at US$699, which comes with 10GB VRAM and a TDP of 320 W.

According to sources, the developers at Igor’s Lab have posted their tests of power consumption capabilities of the RX 6900 XT. And the results are incredibly satisfying. Reports indicate that the board was tested both with Smart Access Memory enabled as well as disabled. The test results suggest that while running at 1080p, the RX 6900 XT consumed a power equalling 299.1 W while Smart Access Memory is enabled. While SAM was disabled, the RX 6900 XT finished a total of 299.7 W, which is not much of a visible difference. Its competitor, the GeForce RTX 3090, on the other hand, consumed 352.7 W power, and the RTX 3080 consumed 328.4 W power.

In the 4H test, the AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT consumed 303.5 W to 303.6 W. At the same time, its competitor, the RTX 3080, had an average power consumption here of 330.0 W and the RTX 3090 was at 356.9 W. So, overall, the test results indicate that the RX 6900 XT is a power-efficient graphics card when compared to the RTX 3080 and RTX 3090.

But as it stands now, both NVIDIA and AMD are yet to solve the supply constraint issue. Hence, no matter the performance or the graphics cards’ original cost, since the supply will not satisfy the demand, their prices will sky-high.

According to sources, the autonomous system, dubbed Titan, is run by hundreds of engineers led by Doug Field. Now the entire team has been moved to the artificial intelligence and machine-learning group.

“Previously, Field reported to Bob Mansfield, Apple’s former senior vice president of hardware engineering. Mansfield has now fully retired from Apple, leading to Giannandrea taking over.”

Giannandrea was appointed as the vice president of AI Strategy and Machine Learning in 2018. He was then promoted to Apple’s executive team as a senior vice president later that year. Before joining Apple, he ran Google’s machine-learning and search teams. According to sources, he is also in charge of Siri and machine-learning technologies across Apple’s products.

Mansfield initially retired from Apple in 2012, only to return for less than a year as its senior vice president in charge of chip technology. Mansfield stepped down from that role in 2013 and then remained as a part-time consultant.

Apple started its project to an autonomous electric car in 2014. But had to face several setbacks, But after the company appointed Mansfield, an independent system’s development gradually started getting back on its tracks. Mansfield has a history of working with Apple; he previously retired from apple in 2012 but returned soon after as the senior vice president in charge of chip technology.

Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook describes the autonomous system’s effort as the “mother of all AI projects and a core technology that we view as very important.” He also described it as “probably one of the most difficult AI projects to work on.”
