0

Putting together an unbeaten streak with draws between the victories is difficult in its own right, but putting together a continuous winning run is even more difficult. However, Manchester City recently managed to eclipse the record for the most wins in England.

Hence, in this list we’ll take a look at the top 5 teams with the longest winning runs in the country:

5. Everton: 12 wins

The Toffees were the first ever English club to win ten games in a row, and all of those victories came in the league. Despite stretching over two seasons, they didn’t win the Premier League title in 1894, losing out to Sunderland.

4. Tottenham Hotspur: 13 wins

Tottenham Hotspur and Northern Ireland football captain Danny Blanchflower was happy to celebrate on the football pitch, here holding the FA Cup aloft after winning the 1961 final against Leicester City to win the league and cup ÔdoubleÕ.

Much like Everton in 1894, Spurs’ winning streak came in the league only. The London whites managed to win 13 games in a row in 1960.

3. Preston North End: 14 wins

The original invincibles of England, Preston North End were one of the best teams in England in the 19th century. However, those days are long gone and financial football has since taken over heavily. They were also the first team to win the league and the FA Cup double.

2. Arsenal: 14 wins

Arsenal were the holders of the record after equaling it in 1987, and ten of these victories came in the league while the other four were in the League Cup. Arsenal won 14 games in a row in all competitions between 12 September and 17 November 1987, and have since been dethroned from the top spot by the team with the longest ongoing winning streak.

1. Manchester City: 16 wins

With the run of form that Guardiola’s City have been on since the arrival of Ruben Dias and the resurgence of John Stones, it wouldn’t be totally crazy to tip the Sky Blues for Premier League as well as Champions League success.

Moreover, the could also win the treble this season having already progressed into the finals of the League Cup with Spurs.

The team from the Northwest finished sixth in the table in the edition held in Dubai last season. Captained by KL Rahul, Punjab managed to win only 6 of their 14 matches and missed out on the playoffs completely.

Punjab Kings, as they will be known from next season, have had some legendary players among their ranks with Adam Gilchrist, Chris Gayle and Brett Lee to say the least. The team will hopefully retain their players and the backroom staff heading into the new campaign, with the change in the name being the only thing new about the franchise.

IPL 2021: Glen Maxwell’s wish is to play for RCB with ‘idol’ AB de Villiers

With three days remaining for the IPL 2021 Auction to take place, Australian all-rounder Glen Maxwell has said that he would not mind playing for the Royal Challengers Bangalore as that would fulfill his desire of playing alongside his “idol” AB de Villiers.

During a media interaction on Thursday, he said, “That’ll be awesome. AB [is] one of my idols and one of the guys I’ve always tried to watch the way he goes about [things].” “It’ll be awesome to work with him, and he’s always been really helpful to me along the journey. Whenever I’ve caught up with him, he’s been brilliant. So to be able to work with him first hand will be pretty cool,” he added.

Previously, Maxwell has suited up for the Mumbai Indians once, the Delhi Capitals (DC) once and the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) twice.

“I get along with Virat pretty well. It’ll be certainly nice to work under Virat and will certainly enjoy batting with him – that’s for sure,” Maxwell said, about playing with RCB captain Virat Kohli.

Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir feels that Royal Challengers Bangalore may go after Glenn Maxwell in the upcoming IPL 2021 mini-auction. The former KKR captain feels Glenn Maxwell will still earn big, despite his indifferent returns in the IPL thus far. “There are teams who will be looking at someone like Maxwell. Surely, RCB will be looking at him. That is my personal opinion. Anything can happen at the auctions. But I feel Maxwell will go to RCB,” said Gambhir.

This year, Maxwell is in the IPL Auction’s highest price bracket of Rs 2 crore after being released by Kings XI Punjab. He has scored 108 runs at a strike-rate of 101.88 from 13 matches in the previous edition.

Currently, Maxwell is part of the Australian squad for the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand. “The Australian team is generally together for a one-day series somewhere in Australia and we get to watch it together and congratulate and commiserate each other depending on what they went for or if they didn’t go. So it’s stressful day for a lot of people, and I’ve been lucky to be on the good side of it a fair few times,” he said about following the IPL Auction with his Australian teammates.

The IPL 2021 auction will take place on February 18 at 3 PM.

Timo Werner is a step away from scoring in his new role under Thomas Tuchel

0

While the goals have not been coming in for Timo Werner yet, he looks like a man reborn under new Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel. The Germany international has undergone a change in role to be included in Tuchel’s system, which seems to be suiting him quite well.

Werner now plays as a left number 10 behind either one of Tammy Abraham or Olivier Giroud, who take up the role of the classic number 9. The new player now has more freedom in the centre to operate not only behind the lone striker but also has another player behind him to cover up.

Y’We are proud of this win to continue our last wins and, for myself, no goal, but it’s good to see I can help the team with other moments,’ Werner said at Bramall Lane.

‘I’m happy when we win, when I can make two assists, it’s good. When I don’t score, it’s a long period for me, you can’t do anything, you have to keep going and the goals will come.

‘Every manager is different, he gives us a lot of ideas. I play as a left 10, not a winger, so I have more space in the middle. I play behind a striker or with a 10 behind me, it’s very good for me.’

The German has not found the back of the net in 14 games, but has been looking evee so threatening under his compatriot. Werner is usually the main fouled in the box, winning penalties for the team thanks to his blistering pace, and he can have the chance to back up in the games to come.
