Chelsea news: Thiago Silva and Jude Bellingham updates

Thiago Silva wants to stay at Chelsea, the defender is a leader across all fronts and is appreciated by the board and manager, Thomas Tuchel too. The two know each other well from their time together at PSG up until last season and are continuing to show a brilliant partnership in the Premier League.

Speaking on the Here We Go podcast, Fabrizio Romano said that he wants to stay and there are a lot of positive feelings about the situation on all fronts. The final decision will be announced at the end of the season. Silva wants to represent Brazil at the 2022 World Cup, and is also keen on staying in Europe.

Elsewhere, Jude Bellingham is staying at Dortmund. Chelsea appreciate him along with many others and were linked with a move for the young Englishman for a sum worth over £100 million. The rumours were squashed by Fabrizio Romano on the Here We Go podcast, saying that he will stay and he will grow at Dortmund and that the Germans have no plan of selling him anytime soon.

Bellingham arrived from Birmingham City only a year ago and has not even completed a full season with the black and yellow club. That said, he has managed to establish himself as one of the most impressive box to box midfielders in the league and looks poised for a move to a big club in the future.

Varane could leave Madrid this summer, with no agreement regarding an extension yet

Raphael Varane is one of the most important players for Real Madrid right now. The French international’s presence as part of the backline is only magnified by the absence of Sergio Ramos from the starting lineup due to injury.

The defender only has one year left on his current deal with Real Madrid, and could be on the verge of moving on. Clubs from England in particular are looking out for a player of his stature, and Madrid could be forced to sell him unless they agree a contract agreement with him in the summer.

The player will otherwise have to walk out on a free transfer next year, and will be eligible to join whichever club he chooses without it concerning Madrid at all. Florentino Perez has come out and left the door wide open for the Frenchman’s departure, saying:

“Varane? I’m happy with our team… if players don’t want to stay at Madrid they can leave.”

Manchester United in particular are keen on landing the 2018 World Cup winner to help solidify the backline and find a suitable partner for club captain Harry Maguire. Chelsea are also reportedly in the race for a centre-back, but have a plethora of options to choose from already.

Varane currently has no agreement in place with Madrid regarding an extension, and with Sergio Ramos’ contract situation already up in the air, Madrid could have a real headache on their hands concerning their players’ contracts this summer.

Eric Garcia’s agreement with Barcelona has been signed since December

0

With the situation quiet surrounding the player, questions have emerged about whether Eric Garcia is set to return to Barcelona after all. Speaking on the Here We Go podcast, Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the Spaniard is still set to return to his former club at the end of the season.

The Italian journalist further asserted that the pre-contract agreement has been signed since December. Nothing has changed regarding the agreement that was struck between Garcia and Barcelona. The only thing that is due is the announcement, which Barcelona have not yet decided the timing of.

Barcelona's top defensive target is Eric Garcia, while Man City already makes alternative signing

Pep Guardiola himself confirmed the transfer of the Spanish centre-back following the Carabao Cup victory against Tottenham Hotspur in the final:

‘Eric Garcia is one of my favourite players. I would love to have 15 Eric Garcias for the way he conducts himself, his behaviour. He’s always thinking in the team.

‘It’s always a good phase, he helps the manager and the backroom staff all the time and I would love it…

Pep Guardiola wants Eric Garcia and is confident that Barcelona cannot snatch him

‘He will go in an incredible team and when the people say the people are unsatisfied if I don’t play them…

‘I think with Eric, like most of the times, he’s not on the bench because he’s going to move to Barcelona, I hope so. But I think of them. It’s tough but it is what it is.’

Lionel Messi will decide his future at the end of the season

0

Leo Messi has been the subject of speculation once again, due to his contract situation still not being resolved at Barcelona. Speaking on the topic on the Here We Go podcast, Fabrizio Romano mentioned that negotiations between the parties are only going to start at the end of the season.

Barcelona are confident they can reach an agreement. The real discussion will be about money and the sporting project that will be taken up at Camp Nou. All that said, they are focused on LaLiga right now, especially considering Barcelona could go to the top of the table tonight if they beat Granada.

The report by Marcelo Bechler was confirmed to be true by Fabrizio Romano. For those unaware, PSG have offered Leo Messi a financially ‘untouchable’ contract that spans three years.

It will be Messi that decides the final outcome in the end. He will decide his future at the end of the season. Barcelona haven’t decided on their project either. Moreover, nothing advanced has been laid down for transfer targets, Memphis Depay, Sergio Aguero or Erling Haaland.

The Argentinian is the top scorer in LaLiga right now and is believed to be happy with the way things are at the club. Barcelona recently lifted the Copa del Rey, beating Atletico Madrid in the finals of the Cup, and could end the season with a domestic double.

A marquee signing is also expected to be completed this summer, as a reassurance to Lionel Messi of the club’s intentions of going for the big trophies.

FC Goa coach and foreign players leave India due to COVID-19 scare; an all-Indian Goa team will play against Al Wahda tonight

FC Goa captain Edu Bedia, Jorge Ortiz and Ivan Gonzalez, along with head coach Juan Ferrando and conditioning coach Javi Gonzalez have left India in a hurry to return to their country, Spain. Australian defender James Donachie is also on the flight with them from Delhi to Madrid via Paris.

FC Goa still has one match left to play in the AFC Champions League against Al Wahda tonight. But with Covid-19 cases on a rapid rise in India, FC Goa’s coach and foreign players have left for home on Wednesday, leaving the AFC Champions League phase. They feared that any more delay could mean they will be locked down in India.

“If they don’t make it to Spain tonight, they may get stuck here for another month. Spain will impose a mandatory quarantine for everyone travelling from India. There could be a travel ban too, besides we don’t know about restrictions or a lockdown here. It made sense for them to leave immediately,” a club official told TOI.

“We cannot fault the players (for leaving early). They gave everything to this club and were professional in every sense,” said the official.

So, FC Goa will now field an all-Indian starting XI against Al Wahda tonight. Although Goa started off in a good fashion with two draws, two successive defeats against Persepolis FC have costed them dearly. They were also on the verge of securing their first win in ACL Al Rayyan but conceded a last-minute equaliser.

When is the FC Goa vs Al Wahda FC ACL match?

The ACL match between FC Goa and Al Wahda will be played on 29th April 2021.

Where will be the match played?

The match will be played at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Goa, India.

What time does the match kick-off?

The match will kick-off at 10:30 PM IST.

Which TV channels will broadcast the ACL match live in India?

Star Sports is the exclusive media broadcasting partner of the AFC Champions League in the Indian sub-continent. You can watch the match live in India on Star Sports 3.

How can you watch the live streaming of the match in India?

You can catch the live streaming of the FC Goa vs Al Wahda match in India on Disney+ Hotstar and Jio TV.

FC Goa released an official statement: “FC Goa would like to inform that the club’s foreign contingent including the Head Coach and foreign staff have been advised to travel back home immediately. This comes as a pre-emptive measure in view of recent policies being taken by European and other countries in regards to travellers from India as the nation battles the second wave of COVID-19 which has engulfed the country.”

“While the AFC Champions League remains an important competition for FC Goa, the club management felt that the well being of the players to be its first and foremost responsibility. We will continue to ensure the same in the days to come.”

“In a season like no other, we would like to thank all the players for their efforts this season. We wish everyone safe health.”

Marsch-Nagelsmann-Flick, the manager shuffle explained

0

Jesse Marsch will be replacing Julian Nagelsmann as the coach of RB Leipzig this summer, since Julian Nagelsmann has been confirmed to be going to Bayern in July, when the season ends. Speaking on the transfer on the Here We Go podcast, Fabrizio Romano confirmed that it wasn’t an easy negotiation and it was like signing a player with no release clause.

Leipzig will receive €25 million with bonuses, which makes it a historical fee considering he is the most expensive manager in the history of football. The Red Bull group will receive €18 million guaranteed and the rest is included in bonuses. Nagelsmann has signed a 5 year deal that will keep him at Bavaria till 2026.

Roma were trying to sign him too, along with Tottenham being interested in him, but the 33-year-old always said the priority for him is Bayern Munich.

Flick will be the new Germany manager immediately after Euros. He received some calls from clubs but always said the World Cup is priority. Everything will be complete in the next few weeks, and will be announced for sure once the season ends.

Marsch has been with the Red Bull group since 2015, coaching New York and Salzburg and winning the domestic double in 2019 with the latter.

Umpires Nitin Menon and Paul Reiffel pulls out of IPL 2021

After multiple cricketers backing off from IPL 2021 due to the outbreak of COVID-19 second wave in India, now the umpires are also pulling out.

Nitin Menon and Paul Reiffel are reportedly pulled out of IPL amid unprecedented cases of COVID-19 in India. Menon flew to Indore as his mother and wife tested positive and Reiffel went back a few days ago after the Australian government banned flights from India till May 15.

A BCCI official told, “Nitin has a small child to look after as his mother and wife have tested positive while Reiffel informed BCCI that he fears not being able to go home due to the Australian government’s decision banning all flights from India. The BCCI already had several local umpires as a backup so they will be officiating in games in which Menon and Reiffel were scheduled to stand.”

A few days ago Ravichandran Ashwin pulled himself out of IPL. Earlier, Aussies Andrew Tye, Kane Richardson and Adam Zampa did the same. MI opening batsman Chris Lynn had asked for a charter plane to go back to Australia but Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison denied any preferential treatment towards the players playing in IPL.

However, BCCI’s interim chief executive officer Hemang Amin assured that they will arrange smooth transport back home once the tournament gets over. He told, “The BCCI is monitoring the situation very closely and is working with the government authorities to make arrangements to get you home once the tournament concludes. Be rest assured that the tournament is not over for BCCI till each one of you has reached your home, safe and sound.”

But the panic among the players are increasing day by day. Some suggested to hault the tournament as well. But nothing was entertained by the official till now.

How Computer Picks Could Change Sports

0

For nearly two decades, data analytics have been an integral part of sports leagues. Looking for any edge over the competition, top franchises hire entire analytics departments to crunch statistics about their team in order to gain insight.

Data can be used to monitor player health, personalize training for an athlete or team, identify weaknesses, offer insight on rival teams, and help staff scout potential players. Because sports data science is relatively new, the applications are constantly expanding.

Today, there are two prime examples of data in sports. In the MLB, the field of sabermetrics has transformed how teams scout and contract players. Rather than opting for established veterans, teams can now identify future stars based on their rookie stats.

Meanwhile, ‘Moreyball’ in the NBA has led to an entirely new style of basketball. Players today look to shoot three-pointers and layups rather than mid-range shots because they’ve been shown to lead to more wins statistically.

In other words, data plays a major role in the major leagues. But it’s also had major implications for surrounding industries.

Oddsmakers Jump Onboard

Although the US was a bit late to launch its own sportsbooks, there’s now a huge market for sports fans to bet online and back their favorite underdog. States like Indiana and West Virginia recently launched their own retail and online sectors, with more expected to join in the coming years.

New companies are looking for a leg up, and many are turning toward data analytics to improve their prediction models. Much like leading franchises and, in the case of tennis or golf, individual players rely on data to improve their tactics, oddsmakers are looking for improved methods to predict who will win a match.

Rather than transform scouting or shooting techniques, sportsbooks rely on historical data from previous seasons, teams, and players to identify patterns. Though fans can do this on their own (and many seasoned punters do), computer picks would do that analytics work for them.

Programs would factor in conditions like weather, player injuries, player and team history, location, and more to cross-reference previous matches against an upcoming event. From there, computer predictions could provide fail-proof advice on outcomes.

Most sportsbooks are looking to adapt machine-learning algorithms. This is a form of AI in which a program will accrue ‘experience’ and ‘expertise’ by learning from its own outputs. However, most sportsbooks are keeping their machine-learning algorithm under wraps.

The Future: Fan Analysis

As mentioned above, data science in sports has nearly unlimited applications. Recently, many franchises have shifted their statistical lens to focus on their fanbases. After all, most leagues are big business. The NFL, for example, is the most valuable sports league in the world with an average franchise worth of $3 billion.

Now that most teams have their analytics department down pat, they’ve begun to expand data science into commercial interests. At the moment, franchises are leaning on data to understand how and when their fans choose to attend games, buy merchandise, and post online about their favorite team.

On a menial level, franchises can use this to figure out what type of mascot fans would prefer. On a bigger level, they can create large-scale attractions at their stadiums, whether VR experiences or high-scale eateries, based on what they learn about their fans.
