The Herculean Task of Coaching Indian Cricket Team: Why Top Coaches Are Reluctant to Coach Team India?

Coaching Indian Cricket Team : Coaching the Indian cricket team, a role revered as one of the most prestigious in the cricketing world, has surprisingly become a daunting challenge. With Rahul Dravid likely stepping down after the T20 World Cup 2024, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) faces a difficult task in finding his successor. Despite being the wealthiest cricket board with a team full of superstars, the BCCI struggles to attract top coaches. Notable names like Ricky Ponting, Justin Langer, and Andy Flower have all declined the opportunity. So, what makes the job of coaching Team India so challenging?

Let’s have a look into more details : Coaching Indian Cricket Team

Immense Pressure

Coaching Team India means dealing with constant pressure to win every match. The expectation is always to come out on top, regardless of the opposition. This immense pressure extends beyond match results. Coaches face pressure regarding team selection, handling intra-squad politics, and managing the larger than life personalities of star players. Few can withstand this relentless scrutiny and stress. Rahul Dravid, who looked relaxed during his tenure as NCA head in 2021, now appears visibly aged, a testament to the job’s demanding nature.

The Herculean Task of Coaching Indian Cricket Team : Why Top Coaches Are Reluctant

A Thankless Job

In Indian cricket, the spotlight is firmly on the players. If the team wins, the credit goes to the players, but if they lose, the coach bears the brunt of the criticism. The head coach’s role, which involves managing the team more than coaching cricket basics, often goes unappreciated. Unlike in Australia or England, where the team identity is prominent, Indian cricket often prioritizes individual hero worship, sidelining the coach’s contributions.

No Personal Life

The demanding schedule of the Indian cricket coach leaves little room for personal life. Coaches only get a two month break during the Indian Premier League (IPL). While Rahul Dravid managed to get some breaks, his predecessors like Ravi Shastri and Anil Kumble had to be constantly on the move with the team. Future coaches are unlikely to get frequent breaks, making it a relentless job that severely impacts personal time.

Not Enough Financial Incentives

While the BCCI offers an attractive package, it pales in comparison to other lucrative opportunities in the broadcasting world or T20 leagues. Rahul Dravid earns Rs 12 Crore annually as the head coach. However, coaches like Justin Langer and Ricky Ponting can make around Rs 4 Crore for just three months in other roles. When combined with opportunities in other leagues or media roles, their earnings can soar to Rs 20-25 Crore a year, making the India coach role less financially appealing.

The Herculean Task of Coaching Indian Cricket Team : Why Top Coaches Are Reluctant

Multiple Restrictions

The India head coach faces several restrictions that do not apply to players. Coaches are prohibited from taking jobs in the IPL or other leagues and have limitations on media appearances and expressing their views publicly. These restrictions further deter potential candidates who value professional freedom and financial gain.

Intense Media Scrutiny

The India head coach is subject to intense media scrutiny. Former players turned commentators often publicly criticize the coach. Sunil Gavaskar, for instance, has criticized Rahul Dravid’s frequent breaks. This relentless media attention adds another layer of pressure, making the role less attractive to potential candidates.

The role of coaching Team India, while prestigious, comes with numerous challenges that deter even the most accomplished coaches. The immense pressure, lack of recognition, limited personal life, inadequate financial incentives, multiple restrictions, and intense media scrutiny create a job environment that is as demanding as it is thankless. As the BCCI searches for Rahul Dravid’s successor, these challenges will continue to loom large, making it one of the toughest coaching jobs in the world of cricket.

Jaiswal showed some resistance with a quickfire 26, but regular wickets from SRH’s bowlers kept RR under constant pressure.

Rajasthan’s middle order crumbled against the spin duo of Shahbaz Ahmed and Abhishek Sharma, who took crucial wickets at critical junctures. Despite a gritty half century from Dhruv Jurel, who scored an unbeaten 56 off 35 balls, RR’s innings sputtered to a close at 139/7 in their 20 overs, falling short by 36 runs.

Erik Ten Hag to be sacked by Man Utd even if they win FA Cup 2024

0

Manchester United have reportedly decided to sack Erik Ten Hag irrespective of the result of the FA Cup final against rivals Manchester City. The Red Devils have endured their worst ever finish in the Premier League, coming 8th in the table.

As a result, their only way to secure Europa League football next season is to win against Manchester City in the FA Cup Final. But considering the form the Sky Blues have been in, it seems like an insurmountable task.

Manchester United to sack Erik Ten Hag irrespective of FA Cup final result

The news to sack Ten Hag has been leaked against the wishes of INEOS, who wanted to keep it under wraps until after the match. Recent news suggesting Manchester United are in the race to recruit Kieran McKenna has reportedly accelerated the decision to remove Erik Ten Hag.

Injuries have played a major part in derailing the Dutchman’s season, but the style of play has not been encouraging for fans either. In spite of that, there have been some matches where the team has played well and has shown that the foundations are being built.

The decision to replace Ten Hag at this stage might not go down well with fans, and certainly takes away from the FA Cup final to be played within 24 hours of time.

On the other hand, City are looking to claim the FA Cup and Premier League for the second season in a row, a feat that has never been achieved before.

While Pep Guardiola’s side is riding a massive wave of momentum, having not lost in domestic competitions since December, United have had their worst season in the English top flight, finishing eighth in the table.

FA Cup 2024 Final prediction

Manchester City are heading in as clear favourites to win the FA Cup for the second season running. The Sky Blues are only without Ederson, after he injured his right eye socket. And Stefan Ortega has proved that he can be just as good between the posts, helping his team win the title on the final day.

United, on the other hand, are dealing with a number of injuries and will be without Harry Maguire in defence. Victor Lindelof and Mason Mount will be in contention for game time, giving Erik Ten Hag a boost in terms of selection. But, they will have to find something special to overcome their rivals who are in sensational form.

Reviewing Punjab Kings’ IPL 2024 Season: Positives, Negatives and Who Should They Retain Ahead of The 2025 Mega Auction

Where They Finished in This Cycle

Punjab Kings’ Season at a Glance

IPL 2024 marked a full decade since Punjab Kings last made it to the playoffs, with their inconsistency once again to blame. On days when their top-order faltered, which was quite often in the first half of the season, PBKS struggled to post a par score. However, there were also standout days, such as when they chased down a target of 262 set by the eventual league toppers with eight balls to spare. Incidentally, their uncapped Indian batters, initially considered inexperienced and a weak link, were the ones who shone brightly in another season of close misses.

Skipper Shikhar Dhawan’s tournament-ending shoulder injury early in the season put a spanner in the works, leaving PBKS short on captaincy experience and in the openers’ role. This, coupled with the lack of returns from the foreign stars, a new home venue that took some getting used to, several last-over finishes that never went in their favor, and inconsistent bowling performances, meant Punjab’s season never really gained any steam.

Punjab Kings’ Player of the Season: Shashank Singh

Unfazed by the auction room drama, Shashank Singh let his bat do all the talking. In a team plagued by inconsistencies in the batting order, Shashank emerged as their most reliable batter and the leading run-getter of the season with 354 runs in 14 innings at an average of 44.25 and a strike rate close to 165. As the team’s designated finisher, he began with a first-ball duck but quickly turned things around, taking his team over the finish line in three of their most memorable wins in IPL 2024, eventually earning a promotion to number 4 in the beleaguered batting order.

Shashank Singh. Image Credits – BCCI

Shashank struck a 29-ball 61* in PBKS’ stunning 200-run chase in Ahmedabad, coming in at 111/5, and proved it was no fluke by hammering 68* in 28 balls at the Eden Gardens, helping Punjab register the highest ever chase recorded in T20 cricket. Although he only bowled one over in the 14 games, he showed he could be a handy option by dismissing Abhishek Sharma with the first ball in Hyderabad.

Punjab Kings’ Best Game

The historic chase at Eden Gardens stands out as Punjab Kings’ best game of the season. When the Narine-Salt led attack saw KKR plunder a jaw-dropping 261/6, not many gave Punjab Kings a chance, especially after they had just dropped four games in a row at their home in Mullanpur. However, Jonny Bairstow and Prabhsimran Singh decided to flick the switch and turn around their indifferent season thus far.

Prabhsimran led the charge with a blistering 20-ball 54 in a 93-run opening stand, while Bairstow scored a fine century, remaining unbeaten with 108 off just 48 deliveries, laying into the KKR attack. Providing the finishing touches was Shashank Singh, who came in at a crucial juncture—178/2 with the visitors still needing 84 off 7.3 overs—and made 68 of those himself, laced with eight towering sixes. Shashank’s heroics propelled PBKS to the finish line with 1.2 overs to spare as they wrote and rewrote several records that night.

Positives- A Move That Worked For Punjab Kings

Backing the Indian uncapped talent proved to be a successful strategy for Punjab Kings. Sanjay Bangar, the Director of Cricket at PBKS, encouraged Ashutosh Sharma at the pre-season camp to embrace his talent rather than seeing himself merely as a slogger. This mindset shift was pivotal for Sharma, who credited it for his success as the team’s hard-hitting finisher, particularly highlighted by his debut knock in Ahmedabad.

Ashutosh Sharma. Image Credits – BCCI

Shashank Singh also benefited from clear role definition and support despite a poor start in his debut game, leading to a breakout season that positioned him as a top contender for retention. Prabhsimran Singh transitioned from being an impact substitute to the team’s opener after Dhawan’s injury, rewarding the team’s faith with explosive half-century knocks against KKR and SRH. Additionally, Harpreet Brar, while only picking up 7 wickets, maintained an impressive economy rate of 7.97, the best among Punjab’s regular bowlers.

Negatives- A Move That Didn’t Work For Punjab Kings

The performance of the overseas batters was a significant drawback for Punjab Kings. Jonny Bairstow, despite scoring a century, only contributed around 40 runs in his other innings. Sam Curran, who stepped in as captain for much of the season and did improve the bowling department, struggled with the bat, delivering low returns that hurt PBKS.

Liam Livingstone faced hamstring and knee troubles, which led to him being in and out of the team frequently, and when he did play, he failed to meet his usual high standards in the shortest format. Bairstow managed 298 runs, Curran contributed 270, and Livingstone added just 111 in his seven appearances, making the overseas batters the biggest flop of the season for Punjab Kings.

Stars of This Cycle For Punjab Kings

One consistent strength for Punjab Kings throughout this cycle has been their finishers. Whether it was Jitesh Sharma in 2022 and 2023, who eventually made his India debut in T20Is, or Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma in the 2024 season, PBKS’s finishers consistently stepped up. Despite Jitesh having a forgettable year in 2024, which potentially cost him a World Cup berth, Shashank and Ashutosh Sharma maintained the momentum, delivering crucial runs at the backend of innings.

Kagiso Rabada. Image Credits – BCCI

Shashank, in particular, was impressive. Despite two poor outings with the bat towards the end of the season, he finished the league round fourth on the list of the best strikers at death, amassing 135 runs off 61 balls at a staggering strike rate of 221.31. This remarkable performance ensured that PBKS continued to have reliable finishers throughout the cycle.

Who Should They Retain Ahead of The 2025 Mega Auction

Ahead of the 2025 Mega Auction, Punjab Kings face crucial decisions regarding player retention. Among the candidates, Arshdeep Singh stands out as a reliable bowler whose consistent performances have been instrumental for the team. Shashank Singh’s breakout season in 2024 showcased his prowess as a dependable finisher and top-order batsman, making him a strong contender for retention. The choice between Prabhsimran Singh and Jitesh Sharma is pivotal, with Prabhsimran’s explosive innings as an opener and Jitesh’s track record as a consistent finisher and India debutant in T20Is both adding weight to their retention prospects.

*Retention/RTM rules ahead of the mega auction haven’t been finalized by the IPL GC. This is just a hypothetical case.

Xavi Hernandez sacked by Barcelona: Hansi Flick to join with contract until 2026

0

Barcelona have sacked Xavi Hernandez as their head coach, going back on the decision to keep hin just weeks ago. The former midfielder will be replaced by Hansi Flick, who was the first-choice for president Joan Laporta.

The former Germany manager has agreed a contract with Barcelona until 2026, and will bring a pair of his own assistants to work alongside him. He has been without work since leaving the national team, and has been waiting for Barcelona for months.

Hansi Flick to replace Xavi Hernandez at Barcelona

Xavi Hernandez recently took to social media to confirm his departure at the end of the season, two and a half years after taking charge. The Spaniard initially told the club that he would be leaving, only for Laporta and sporting director Deco to convince him to change his mind weeks ago.

Now, in a dramatic turn of events reportedly caused by Xavi’s comments about the state of the squad, he has been relieved of his duties, informed by the president himself. The case itself has been very poorly handled for a club of Barcelona’s stature, making fans question the club’s workings.
