Who says sequels to flops can’t strike gold? Awarapan 2, starring Emraan Hashmi, wrapped its opening week at a stunning Rs 111.50 crore nett, proving that nostalgia and a cult fanbase can outshine even the toughest odds. The original 2007 film was a box office disaster — yet its sequel is now on track for a possible Blockbuster verdict.

Why Audiences Are Showing Up

Directed by Nitin Kakkar, the romantic action drama pulled in mixed reviews but still delivered a Super-Hit run, largely riding on the goodwill of the original Awarapan’s cult following. Co-starring Disha Patani and Shabana Azmi, the film has already become Emraan Hashmi’s highest-grossing solo lead film — a milestone that speaks volumes about the current appetite for intense, music-driven love stories.

With no major new release competing for screens, Awarapan 2 is expected to see a healthy spike in its second weekend before facing real competition from Toxic. The film’s success also mirrors a broader industry pattern: last year’s re-releases of former flops like Sanam Teri Kasam and Laila Majnu turned into hits, and now a sequel is repeating that trend on a much bigger scale.

Hashmi’s career arc itself adds to the story — he dominated the early 2010s with hits like Murder 2 and Jannat 2, a career trajectory not unlike many actors who’ve experienced a mid-career slump followed by a genre revival, a pattern well documented in general discussions of film career resurgence in cinema.

What’s Next

If Awarapan 2 continues to hold steady through its second weekend, a Blockbuster tag looks well within reach — a rare feat for any sequel, let alone one following an original disaster.
