BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony Recap: Every Major Announcement You Need to Know

If you’ve been refreshing your feed all morning waiting for BlizzCon news, you can finally relax — the wait is over. BlizzCon® 2026 kicked off in style at the Anaheim Convention Center, and Blizzard Entertainment President Johanna Faries opened the show with a heartfelt nod to the community that’s kept these universes alive for decades. “Why making and playing games will matter always,” she told the crowd, setting the tone for a ceremony packed with reveals, nostalgia, and a few genuine surprises.

Whether you’re a Warcraft veteran, a Diablo diehard, or just here for the Overwatch esports drama, here’s everything announced today, broken down so you don’t have to sit through the full replay.

BlizzCon Big Reveals

World of Warcraft Enters a New Era

The headline act of the ceremony was easily World of Warcraft: Forever, a third pillar of WoW alongside Modern and Classic. It promises more than 1,000 new quests, nine dungeons, two raids, and an entirely new playable race called the Skyborne. Beta access opens 18 September AEST, with a full launch on 5 November AEDT.

That’s not all for Warcraft fans. The Eclipse (12.2) update arrives mid-way through the Midnight expansion’s Worldsoul Saga, pushing the story closer to a confrontation with Xal’atath. And looking further ahead, Blizzard confirmed The Last Titan as the expansion that will close out this two-decade-long saga, with more details promised early next year.

Fans revisiting the RTS roots of the franchise also got a treat: Warcraft III: Reforged received its first new campaign in over 23 years, “Forsaken Kingdom,” alongside a 3.0 update with a graphics overhaul and a revamped World Editor.

StarCraft Returns With a Bold New Direction

After years of relative quiet, StarCraft is coming back — not as another RTS entry, but as a story-driven, open-world shooter slated for North American Spring 2030. It’s a significant departure for the franchise, and one that signals Blizzard is willing to reinvent even its most iconic IPs rather than simply iterate on them.

Diablo Fans Get Their Biggest News in Years

Blizzard confirmed Diablo V is officially in development, targeting a North American Spring 2029 release. The framing is bleak and intriguing in equal measure — Sanctuary has fallen, and Diablo has won, leaving players to grapple with what comes next in a world already lost.

Closer to today, Diablo IV: Season of Hell’s Legacy launches 16 September AEST, celebrating the franchise’s 30-year history with the return of the Prime Evils and Deckard Cain. An Amazon class pack is also confirmed for the first half of 2027, and the Age of Hatred Collection lands on Nintendo Switch 2 on 16 September AEST with full cross-play and cross-progression support.

Adding another layer to the franchise’s expansion beyond gaming, Blizzard also announced an animated Diablo series in development with Netflix, with more details to come.

Overwatch, Heroes of the Storm, and Hearthstone Updates

Overwatch had a packed showing: Season 5 introduces a new Support Hero named Doctrine, reworks for Sombra and Roadhog, a new map (Watchpoint: Grimsvötn), and the conclusion of The Reign of Talon — the franchise’s first year-long narrative arc. On the entertainment side, YOASOBI will headline BlizzCon’s first-ever esports halftime show at the Overwatch World Cup, while LE SSERAFIM closes out the weekend with a live performance.

Heroes of the Storm

it isn’t dead yet — Xal’atath joins the Nexus roster on 29 September AEST, with hints that more content could follow.

Hearthstone

It has revealed its first new class in six years, the Monk, arriving in 2027, alongside a new expansion, Reign of the Black Empire, introducing the “Assemble” keyword mechanic. An overhauled Journal feature and a new Battlegrounds minion type, Aberrations, round out the update.

Why This BlizzCon Matters

Taken together, today’s Opening Ceremony wasn’t just a list of new content drops — it was Blizzard signaling a genuine shift. Three simultaneous WoW experiences, a StarCraft reboot as a shooter, and a Diablo TV series all point to a studio betting big on reinvention rather than repetition. For the full official rundown, Blizzard’s own BlizzCon blog post and Blizzard Files press kit have additional details, and the official BlizzCon livestream is still rolling for anyone who wants updates as they happen.
