Beyond the Screen: OpenAI’s Plan to Put ChatGPT on Your Face

ChatGPT might not stay trapped inside your phone or laptop for much longer. OpenAI President Greg Brockman recently confirmed the company is actively working to bring ChatGPT to smart glasses and wearable devices, signaling a major shift in how people could interact with AI in everyday life.

What OpenAI Is Actually Building?

Speaking at a media briefing in New York, Brockman said OpenAI wants its AI assistant to move beyond smartphones and computers entirely. The company is developing APIs that would let developers integrate ChatGPT directly into wearables, though Brockman was candid that this technology is still in its early stages.

He described OpenAI’s broader ambition as building an AI assistant closer to Iron Man’s Jarvis — something that goes beyond a simple chatbot to actively interact with computers and applications on a user’s behalf. Brockman also pointed to Codex, OpenAI’s existing technology that already lets AI control computers and complete tasks across different apps, as a sign of where things are headed.

The Bigger Hardware Picture

This isn’t happening in isolation. OpenAI has reportedly been building out its own hardware division alongside Apple’s former design chief Jony Ive, with earlier industry reports pointing to a possible lineup that includes a screen-free smart speaker, a voice recorder, and even a wearable pin — alongside smart glasses. Brockman acknowledged that privacy, safety, resource use, and regulation will all shape how far and how fast this hardware push can go.

The move puts OpenAI in direct competition with Meta, which already sells smart glasses, and Apple, which is reportedly developing similar wearable products of its own.

Smart glasses as a product category have a long, bumpy history — from early efforts like Google Glass to today’s renewed wave of AI-powered wearables — which you can read more about on Wikipedia.

Why This Matters?

If OpenAI succeeds, ChatGPT could shift from something you type or talk to on a screen into an assistant that quietly processes what you see and hear in real time — answering questions, summarizing information, or helping with tasks without you ever pulling out a phone. It’s an ambitious bet on “ambient computing,” but as Brockman himself noted, the wearable APIs needed to make it happen are still early in development.
