“Between Steps” First Look: Choo Young Woo Trades the Pool for Robotics After a Devastating Loss, and Kim So Hyun Walks Right Into His Path

Some stories don’t need a dramatic twist to break your heart — just two people quietly finding their way back to themselves. That’s the promise behind “Between Steps,” and the newly released stills of Choo Young Woo are already setting the tone.

Between Steps: story behind the drama

“Between Steps” comes from the late director Ahn Pan Seok, known for beloved hits like “Something in the Rain” and “One Spring Night.” It follows Park Min Jae (Choo Young Woo), a former competitive swimmer who lost his right leg to illness, and Im Yoo Jin (Kim So Hyun), a graduate student navigating her own sense of being lost. Their paths cross, and both find the strength to move forward — together.

The new stills show Min Jae at a hospital, visibly anxious while waiting for test results — a quiet reminder that his journey with illness isn’t fully behind him. Other images capture him deep in robotics research, driven by a hope many wouldn’t expect: he’s studying the field in pursuit of one day regaining the use of his lost leg.

Between Steps: Overview

A character built on quiet resilience

Choo Young Woo described being drawn to the script’s simplicity — not a dramatic single incident, but the process of two people who’d each lost their way finding strength through each other. Working with Ahn Pan Seok and Kim So Hyun, he said, made the decision an easy one.

On playing Min Jae, the actor spoke candidly about balancing strength with unspoken pain: a brilliant, dedicated Ph.D. student who keeps romance at arm’s length out of fear of being hurt again, all while carrying grief he rarely expresses out loud. Choo Young Woo said he wrestled with how much of that inner conflict to reveal to viewers, since Min Jae himself works hard to hide it.

Themes of resilience after physical loss and identity are woven throughout Korean melodrama storytelling, and “Between Steps” appears to lean firmly into that emotional tradition rather than chasing spectacle.

Why it’s worth watching?

With Ahn Pan Seok’s signature emotional realism behind the camera and two committed leads in front of it, “Between Steps” looks set to be one of October’s most quietly powerful releases — less about plot twists, more about two broken people slowly rebuilding.
